Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

Good. Now that Turgeon is gone I have no reason not to root for them. It’d be good for the Big Ten.

Just hope they don’t steal too many of our DMV recruits though :joy:. Dug, Hunt, and T-Will DMV boys has worked out great!

Whenever you can hire a guy with 1 tourney win in 15 years, you have to do it.

There have to be 30 dudes Maryland could hire that would be better than Kevin Willard. Niko Medved, for one.

I actually think this is a clever hire and staff. If you can wall off the DMV you’ll have the most talented roster in the B1G every year.

Sort of like ed cooley before this year, yeah its seton hall and providence but great coaches win everywhere these days. I mean the current best program in the country is in spokane washington and plays in the wcc.

Juwan will still be the best recruiter in the Big Ten so I’m not too worried about the Maryland DMV thing

Willard has a chance to be the first former Seton Hall coach to lead a Big Ten team to the NCAA tournament.

No, I’m not bitter; why do you ask?

Willard doesn’t seem like a terrible hire to me. Back when I was scrambling and trying to find non Cooley candidates I wanted Michigan to check in on Willard. Presuming he can recruit at a commensurate level they will solid. His best Seton Hall team was 2020, if that team makes the S16 the tournament talking point isn’t as loud.

Then again Turgeon can likely be described similarly and he just got run out of town so

I don’t think it’s as simple as tournament shortcomings, as much as it’s the fact that his teams are generally mediocre every year and either don’t make the tournament or aren’t expected to win a game. Except for one single year. Seton Hall isn’t a great job… but he also didn’t really elevate it at all. I don’t really see any reason to believe he’s a good enough coach to crack into the top of the Big Ten (unless they become a recruiting powerhouse because of their assistant hires, in which case… didn’t need to be him really).

I don’t know if it’s fair to say he didn’t elevate it. He has 5/14 of Seton Hall’s all-time bids, would be 6/15 with the covid year

Was he way better than Louis Orr, Tommy Amaker or PJ Carlesimo? I don’t really see it… Also as far as using “making the tournament as a barometer”, the death of the Old Big East has made it exponentially easier for Seton Hall to make the tournament. They can now be a mediocre team and make it, whereas before, being a mediocre team meant you’re probably going 6-12 in conference and have no chance of being selected.

Also unrelated, looks like the belief is that all 3 of MSU’s seniors are gone. So they’ve got 3 scholarships to use in the transfer portal.

FWIW, I thought Seton Hall was well coached when they played UM.

This is how I see it also. Which is kinda disappointing if your Maryland as that was a good opportunity to swing for the fences.

If their goal is to lock down the DMV that’s a good strategy. And I don’t think Willard is an awful coach but I don’t see this being a home run hire.

Dylan likes to say “Marylands problem is they can’t win the ACC” and I don’t know this hire changes the calculus on that.

Their fan base is crazy passionate but incredibly negative and turns on the program/coach crazy fast too. I think that hurts them too.

They could be really good honestly. Walker, Hoggard, Akins can be a very good backcourt. Plus Christie and Hall. Seems like Izzo was hoping for this since he only took 2 guys. If they get a center and a wing I’ll be a little concerned

They had Turgeon for TEN years.

They hated him for nine
