Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

Yeah, Beilein never lost a BTT opener. That’s incredible. A big reason why his teams on the bubble always made it in.

I think the Illinois practice jersey game is one of my top ten favorite basketball games ever

Was in the building for that one. Unfortunately also had had weekend plans in NYC forced on me, so I couldn’t be there for all of it. @theoracle was, that lucky bastage.

I remember the 2018 Iowa game but not the 2019 one. Seems like the day games are ingrained in my brain much more, likely because I was skirting school/work for all of them.

Will never forget sitting across from my boss at a table on site at a client as he feeds me occasional updates on the OKSt-UM game and try to feign shock in them since I’m watching it on my computer unbeknownst to him right in front of him, while also trying to hold in my screams as both teams throw haymakers back and forth.

This is a bad list but just stuff off the top of my head. I know the OK State first rounder is missing

Incase anyone else was deciding to go back and watch it

I like the list. I might work on my personal list but it would be really similar with the addtition of:

  • Poole makes a splash vs. Houston
  • Burke rips the ball from Appling and rips Izzo’s heart out (happy anniversary to this play today btw)
  • Hardaway Jr. becomes a human flamethrower to beat OSU

Might have to add the VCU game at the palace in too. I’d probably keep the Charles laughing at Ward game in but I honestly I could group the whole NYC BTT together. That Purdue game was special too

ah see the Poole shot was a grievous oversight. That is mandatory. And I watched it with a bunch of Buckeyes!

The game I never see mentioned on lists like this but think really shaped Beilein’s tenure and helped elevate the program was the win over Ohio State at home in 2012.

three of these are regular season OOC games…could cull them for better ones. Gonzaga, Villanova, UCLA

Blowout win over Wisconsin that year was similar too… U-M got a lot of previous bad vibes off its back, raised a banner and moved up a level as a program. They lost in the NCAA Tournament to Ohio so no one likes to look back on that year but it was transformational IMO.

was that the game where Deshaun Thomas had like 80% of their points? We could stop everyone but him

I think about “that’s what I’d dooo” sometimes but that wasn’t actually a Michigan game lol

oh what about the 30 point Tennessee beatdown that led into Michigan vs. Duke concurrent with the Fab Five doc

But who was the real winner of that game since all those guys reunited to win a TBT championship?

I was definitely at the Michigan/OSU home games in both 2012 and 2013 but for some reason the 2013 game sticks with me way more. I think it’s a combination of Hardaway going nuclear, the late blocks on Craft, and how the 12/13 season finished (even though we did share the conference championship in 11/12).

'13 was just a different beast entirely… '12 was more about a program that could never really stack up to what OSU was at the time or what Wisconsin was at the time and finally getting it done.

The narrative around that whole '13 season quickly shifted to wow Michigan is good enough to be something really special.

Absolutely my best Crisler memory. It was absolutely on fire that night. A Kansan friend who came with me said it was one of the loudest basketball games he’d been to. And my oh my TH2 put on a performance…

I couldn’t get a scalper lower than $40 for those. I’d paid $20 the whole season through, sometimes for really solid seats. At tip he said to his scalper friends ``I’d rather eat these than lower the price". A half hour later I saw him at Bar Louie. Still regret not caving in to that g-d leech.

The VCU game was glorious. Here we hadn’t made the Sweet 16 in almost 20 years and people were suggesting Beilein wasn’t a good tournament coach (crazy to think of that now). VCU was the trendy upset pick. And then … total demolition.
