Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

I feel like any buzz regarding Hunter coming back matters more to me than normal message board BS because he was extremely open in telling everyone preseason that this was his final year.

Hunter is a really interesting case because to your point he was certainly planning on leaving. At the same time it’s becoming really apparent he’s not going to be drafted and if he’s leaving he’s not very likely to be in the NBA next year. I’m not sure he can improve his stock much either. The tug of war between NIL and guys who are borderline NBA players will be really fascinating to watch.

Around this time of year last year Sam Webb said Mike Smith was leaning toward a return, so grain of salt and all that, but I’d rather hear such rumblings than not hear them. Everybody go buy another shirt!

There is more to the MSU thing than just “first round draft picks”…though I do agree the narrative has probably surpassed the reality.

Marginal NBA prospects go pro all the time whether their NBA stock warrants it or not. Michigan saw that with Darius Morris, DJ Wilson, Jordan Poole, Iggy, etc. In most of those situations, it was probably the right decision for them even if they didn’t get lottery money. (I do realize you could also point out examples of guys that have stayed - though in the late Beilein era we weren’t getting a ton of seniors sticking around from our 3-4* recruits.) Guys like Winston, Tillman, Payne, etc. stuck around longer than comparable players like Burke, DJ, Iggy, Moe, etc.

The other part of the narrative is that Izzo has routinely played guys erratic minutes, benched them for lesser players, chewed them out in public, etc. with almost no transfers until this past year. Michigan has seen a far larger share of transfers over the last decade than MSU - even with a track record of Beilein putting more players in the league and squeezing the most out of his players.

Now the reality is that it isn’t THAT extreme and the coaching transition at Michigan has altered the entire narrative and data. However, if Brown and/or Bingham come back AGAIN for another year of the circus and playing time roller coaster - then I really will wonder if Izzo has blackmail on them.

Well, whatever he has, he has it. Seems unlikely to change. Maybe our guy might have more of it than our previous guy. We’ll see.

NIL seems a huge variable in this equation that will make Beilein/Juwan comparisons pretty difficult.

As opposed to his short stint in the before world…

We’d have decades of Izzo, who will coach until he’s 127, whining at every single press conference that his best player’s injured.

Izzo being a literal vampire is not hypothetical

Holtmann starting his patented late season collapse. After a huge win @ Illinois, they lost @ Maryland on Sunday and are now down 8 at home in the 2nd half vs Nebraska.

Nebraska been weirdly competitive since AD spoke about Hoiberg. Coming off a blowout win and were mildly competitive vs Iowa.

If I am holtmann and don’t make the 2nd weekend, I am trying to get the Louisville or Maryland job.
