Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

The Big Ten title is gonna be a crazy race. If Purdue manages to choke it away to one of three teams we can’t stand with the gift schedule they got, we better see a migration out of Painter-ville here.

Completely agree. They returned everyone, they have three NBA draft picks, they have a relatively favorable schedule. Feels like Painter needs to hire his Yaklich. They have all of that experience, an NBA athlete at wing, and a 7-5 guy but suck at defense.

Purdue’s problem is that its three best offensive players are bad defensive players.

Turnovers were the difference in that game. MSU had at least three steals to easy layups.

And two of them can’t be on the court at the same time effectively.

Meanwhile Purdue had a steal turn into an MSU 3 pointer.

What a ref show

I see the argument. I just feel like it sends a bad message to your team, basically that you don’t have faith in the D.

I was going to ask which one, but there were two or three down the stretch (Gillis running into the screener, Gillis being held on the rebound, Edey being held on the rebound) that went against Purdue that were all bad calls. Gillis on the screen was just a weak call (no-call would have been appropriate), Gillis on the rebound was probably a MSU foul, and the Edey call was a huge miss. I was surprised Painter didn’t request a hook and hold review on that play. Maybe Edey didn’t tell him what happened.

No need to apologize to me; I didn’t make those calls!

How does Purdue’s ballscreen defence stack up (I know you’ve mentioned it, but I don’t recall)? I thought they were helpless against the ballscreen today.

It’s very bad. Big reason that Michigan was so effective scoring against them.

So MSU wins just in time to rebound off a late season collapse, Illinois loses just before our game, and Wisconsin gains the lead for the conference title. Great.

Fear not. Wisconsin is less than an hour away from running into a human buzz saw.

Gillis running into the screen was the one I was referring to. Then, on the same play the State screener, I think Marble, stuck his butt out on the screen, but I think the running into the screen call had already been whistled.

I, too, thought Painter should have asked for a hook and hold, but don’t know if he would have gotten it. That one was VERY physical between both players.

How about the block/charge call earlier? Hoggard seemed pretty surprised they called a charge on him. The announcers implied it may have been a block. I ask based on our conversation a few days ago about the rules of being set to take a charge.

Dylan @umhoops whats your read on Rutgers -2.5 today vs. Wisconsin? You nailed MSU so I need a heat check from you.

Stay away… I honestly think that the perception of both teams is better than they are. I would lean Rutgers at home but probably stay away.

I don’t care if he had position. That charge Davison drew on the fast break should never be called. Happened a few tenths of a second after the pass and is clearly just the defender baiting a foul.

75% chance of a fight in this game. Rutgers is scrappy and Wisconsin is dirty and it’s close.

Rutgers gotta be my favorite team in the big ten outside of Michigan. Hard not to root for
