I need a Painter dialogue at some point. Love his Xs and Os in the halfcourt but how is this team so horrible defensively? They were top 30 last year with all the same guys. Doubling Marble and Hauser is such a stupid decision.
they’d both fit pretty dang good here as grad trasnfers
Part of it is probably some 3 point luck regression. Last year they were 335th in defensive 3 point rate, but top 70 in 30 point percentage defense. This year they’re 291st in 3 point rate but dropped to 183 in percentage.
Yeah, I don’t get it either. Is there some sort of weird voodoo about defensive game plans against MSU? Edey and Williams can’t handle MSU post ups?
Well MSU shot 50%+ from 3 and there are two fouls on Edey and Trevino but Purdue is only down 2. Avoid foul trouble and stop giving up wide open 3s and they can win this.
MSU played a great half. Gonna need another one to win. Purdue just didn’t look up for a fight for most of the half.
Purdue should like where they are. They have hit 1 3 pointer, MSU has hit every 3 pointer it seems. Less minutes from Ethan Morton and fewer fouls on guys like Williams/Edey/Gillis should help.
How did Purdue not look up for a fight?
I can’t believe I am going to say this…but I think Frankie might be terrifying if he played for MSU. I am watching Hoggard, a PG with almost no skill other than “run a fast break” be successful attacking when his instructions are clearly just that simple. Put Frankie In a system where he’s told to do that and he might look pretty darn good. He might be Tum Tum…but still.
MSU did really well from three in that half (sounds familiar against Purdue) but are only up two. Purdue needs to keep this a half court game at all costs and get Ivey going.
They looked up for an offensive fight
MSU gets away with some outrageous screen fouls. It doesn’t help them either because those are called in the ncaa tournament. I suppose it does help them to reach the ncaa tournament.
I do appreciate that MSU’s defensive strategy in the post is just to hammer guys relentlessly and then complain about displacement in the halftime interview.
Big Ten has a real officiating problem with how big guys like Kofi, Edey, Hunter, etc. are handled. Not sure what the answer is and what happens in the NCAA Tournament, but it is definitely a trouble spot IMO.
Kofi and Edey especially get absolutely hammered.
You think they did, or you’re questioning why they wouldn’t?
I mean, they went on the road and played a pretty good half and are only down a possessions after MSU shot 60% from three.
I know that Hunters FT rate is down a lot. Is that true for Kofi and Edey too?
I just thought MSU was looking more intense and Purdue wasn’t matching it. They’re in it because they’re simply just a better team. Outside of Edey, idk which Purdue players had a good half.
Can/will State maintain this energy throughout the second half?
Thought Purdue missed a major opportunity there. MSU came out flat offensively and Ivey turned the ball over three times in four possessions
Yeah Purdue guards have decided this half they’re going to drive to the basket, get cut off, and then have no idea what to do leading to a TO
