Wow, didn’t expect that one
Feels like this may incentivize a lot of Indiana’s portal players to come back. That being said, even if everyone comes back I’m not sure how good that roster will end up being next year without some major portal adds

Big news but i really have never seen an nba future for him. IU insiders thought he was for sure gone before the season though.
Lander I think will come back. Stewart already did. I think Franklin is gone.
Phinisee/Lander
Leal/Stewart
Hunter/Geronimo
Race/Some Guy
TJD/Some Guy
that’s pretty good
Is it? Haha. Wasn’t very good this year even with Durham and Franklin too. Race is in the portal too so they’ll have to convince him to come back. I hear the new staff is high on “Some Guy” though so maybe he’s the key to unlocking their potential
I hope they keep playing Galloway
yeah actually it kind of sucks re-reading it
It really is impossible to predict teams at this point with the portal bloated to about 1300 players. Huge changes for everyone are still to come and we haven’t even seen the final four play out yet.
I do think having a competent coach could do wonders for IU by itself. I’m personally pretty skeptical that Woodson is going to be successful long term in college, but I do think from an actual scheme point of view he will be much better than Archie ever was (which is barely a compliment).
Having Trayce back might have pull with other guys in the portal. I can see guys wanting to play with him.
Great job by Archie taking TJD from a one and done and getting a third year out of him!
Hard to predict IU not only because of the portal but because of the coaching… upgrade??? Not sold on Woodson but he has to be better at least schematically from Archie. Roster is still a mess and not real good but a new coach to try to get something out of it is probably their best hope.
I’m gonna stand pat–by my lonesome, if I have to–in thinking that all of the reasons that Woodson won’t succeed (because others didn’t)–still don’t add up to him failing. Add IU’s cachet to his resume, give him support in recruiting and learning the college ropes. . . dismissing him out of hand just does not make sense.
I think it would be silly to assume Woodson will fail at IU, but I am not sure what he has done that would give reason to expect him to succeed. He was never known as some tactical genius in the NBA nor does he have any track record of success at college to look back on. He’s also old which tends to be a relative knock against a coach when it comes to recruiting.
I think the most likely outcome is that he is mediocre and has IU maybe a slight improvement from Archie’s tenure and they are looking for another coach in 5 years after he hasn’t won a Big Ten title and hasn’t had big NCAA tournament success.
The example in my mind is Herm Edwards at ASU. I was certain that experiment would be an epic failure. I was wrong. Now, there are some important differences, like Edwards’ general charisma (obvious recruiting implications) etc. but I think it’s prudent to allow for some chance that Woodson is better than expected.
Herm is not a failure by ASU standards but he is just .500. Is he recruiting really well? I haven’t followed closely
Quick and dirty search of 247 team rankings shows that they were getting worse each year of Graham’s last three years and are getting better each year under Edwards. But my point wasn’t that he is recruiting really well, just that he has a charisma (and exposure, considering his airtime on ESPN) advantage over Woodson that is an easy to point to (but also superficial) difference between the two.

Turg vs Howard next year will be awesome
UNC must’ve been sniffing around lol
When you can hire a 68 year old NBA coach with a sub-50% win record off the assistant roster of the 9th place eastern conference team
well
you just gotta do it
What do you define as success vs. failure for Woodson at Indiana? Is making the tournament just about every year, maybe winning a big ten once every five years and making the sweet sixteen once every five years succeeding? At most places that would be considered a success, I am just not sure what Indiana fans would consider a success.
When the bar is set at perennial Big Ten and final four contender I would say any coach is going to be a failure just because that is so hard to do. It is a lot easier to predict failure and be right because the job is hard then predict success and be proven correct.
Impossible to say with Woodson, TBH. Making some nice early moves though… keeping Trayce, getting a transfer or two back and it looks like IU is about to pick up a nice guard from the portal.
