Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

May I interest you in a tall glass of “Hoosier Kool-aid”?

Hoosier version of “Field of Dreams”.

At least with Moser recruits could see a guy who has had tourney success. Obviously with Beilein you know what you’re getting.

This hire is just underwhelming and lacks any kind of excitement. Clearly he knows how to coach, but hard to see this being a hire that gets you to B1G championships and sustainable tourney success.

As far as flailing former blue-blood program hires go, this is like Michigan hiring Hoke. It’s just one you know is going to fail from the start.

Yeah pretty good comparison I would say.

I don’t hate it for IU… Matta is a nice addition. Woodson should be good X’s and O’s wise given his NBA experience. Will be interesting to see how they fill out the staff still.

Recruiting is the big question mark, I’d say. It probably would have been with Porter Moser too, though.

What’s happening in cbb reminds of what happened after carrol had all that success at usc, bunch of schools went out and hired Nfl retreads

Who is the Carrol that everyone is following? I feel like hiring NBA guys was a trend before Juwan was hired at Michigan.

I think it’s better than Hoke. Hoke had only coached at a couple of mid-majors with middling results. Woodson’s been an NBA coach and will probably have NBA guys willing to vouch for him. And Matta in the mix can’t hurt. I would be surprised if he failed as badly as Archie … but I don’t think he’ll win big either.

I could see him having a Turgeon-like tenure.

I guess Penny landing the #1 recruiting class was the start of it?

I am skeptical on the Xs and Os. He has been a head coach in the NBA for 8 full seasons…but not for seven years and he has only had a winning record for 3 of those 8 years. Maybe he will be a high energy recruiter and leverage his NBA experience for his scheme. Or maybe he’s a failed NBA head coach that is nearing retirement age without any recruiting or coaching experience at the college level.

Penny wasn’t an NBA guy.

I mean, I think Juwan’s hire serves as a pretty good reminder of how much more advanced the NBA game can be compared to the college game. I would bet a lot of money that Woodson is significantly better Xs and Os wise than Archie Miller.

if Woodson steals Lewis from UCLA that’s probably a good #1 assistant/HCIW setup

If Mike Woodson ends up working out and he’s a high-level X and Os guy (I have no idea how good or bad he is at it. I was too young to be vaguely cognizant about that level of detail when he was last a head coach), then at that point, every college team should just be hunting down any former NBA HC that they can find.

I think hiring guys with NBA backgrounds is smart. Modern nba is ahead of the curve comparatively. It’s a big reason I like Shrewsberry. But if I’m hiring a guy with nba experience I want a couple things in addition: 1. Young with recruiting ties (Juwan, Penny) or 2. Some college experience (Musselman, Shrewsberry). Just a straight up career nba guy that had a mediocre career as a head man and now has been an assistant for 8 years? Doesn’t excite me.

I’ll be rooting for him cause I have nothing against Indiana but I see mediocrity ahead. Maybe I’m just a jaded Hawks fan.

Well…I guess in comparison to Archie you’re right. He’s John Wooden in that comparison

What about Eddie Jordan? He had similar NBA head coaching experience and (lack of) success as Woodson.

I’m guessing IU puts a lot more money into infrastructure around him as far as assistants and support staff. Matta is already a pretty clear example of that.

Also… Rutgers.

There’s definitely some unknown in it (and I’m not an expert of Mike Woodson’s personality) but building a pro-style staff as a program “brand” seems to make some sense given the current climate.
