It’s smart not to get too far removed from Richard’s system. Just needs a few tweaks.
Man, the Big Ten could really use an upgrade in coaching talent/depth in the league. I don’t think Ben Johnson does it, or the PSU guy, and Indiana could still surprise but the early names don’t inspire a lot of confidence.
Top Four Big Ten coaches in alphabetical order Holtman, Howard, Izzo and Painter. Is Underwood fifth? Turgeon? Pikiell? Maybe this poor tournament performance is making me overly pessimistic about the league, but that coupled with the lack of NBA talent is not inspiring around the league is not great.
At least Michigan has a guy who seems to know how to coach and recruit high level talent.
So much for Brian Dutcher. I tried to tell the board.
even if Ben Johnson is your #1 guy you can get him just as easily six weeks from now. he’s not going anywhere. Xavier isn’t on a tournament run. don’t you want an answer from Musselman or Dutch first? Medved? Craig Smith? don’t you want to talk to anyone else?
Holtmann has done nothing to be considered a great coach. In 10 years as a head coach he has 0 conference titles, 0 conference tournaments, is 6-6 in the NCAA tournament and has made it out of the first weekend once.
Too late, Johnson is Minny’s coach now.
In a world of advanced stats and increasingly sophisticated ways of seeing the game, people’s takes on coaches still tend to be based mostly in how the hive mind thinks that this or that guy dresses, looks, etc. (often on not much). Tim Miles was a great example of that. Nice guy.
Wow that super sucks for all parties. Obviously he wanted to get back into coaching and now the rest of the coaching world will know they weren’t IU’s first choice. Yikes.
Why does a coach need to pass a physical? I mean, I kinda get it, but very weird.
The 247 Indiana site is disputing it
Matta’s health is a special risk, I think. Kind of like Jerry Kill. His back is torturous and a bunch of surgeries haven’t fixed it.
Disputing he was offered the job, or that he failed the physical?
247 and rivals team sites getting into fights is older than the universe itself.
He dropped out of coaching because of his back. Makes sense to make sure he can physically do the job again if you’re going to invest in him long term.
Also seems like a public university shouldn’t be able to disqualify a candidate for a coaching position due to disability. Seems illegal.
FWIW Peegs has been sort of a disaster zone in this search. A lot of self-insertions into very speculative threads
just what IU needs next – HIPAA violation and discrimination lawsuit
Maybe they could get Gene Hackman with an ear piece and have him stand on the sideline pointing and shouting while Thad gives instructions.
Snow did comment on it saying he wasn’t signed, and I would think he still has Matta connects from OSU, but who knows.
