Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

  1. He at least wants to make it seem like having to make up games against PSU, NW, and Indiana would hurt Michigan’s chances in the B1G race (maybe he’s technically right, because Michigan would have to go 3-0 to not hurt their win% and Im not sure if they wouldve been given >50% chance to do so; but then again, if Michigan played all 20 games, then the conference would be determined by total wins and gotta think playing those 3 games would be pretty likely to give Michigan at least 2 wins)

  2. He’s unabashedly whining about the fact they they didnt get to play M immediately after the pause ended; so he missed out on an inherent advantage that only exists because these kids are playing during a PANDEMIC. Just despicable and grimy.

In fairness to him, they now seem likely to have to play us without their POTY / best player, so I at least understand why playing now ends up hurting them as much as playing then would have hurt us. Obviously Ayo’s injury is not Michigan’s fault but I can understand feeling upset about the luck.

This is a good point, but Underwood was definitely blaming/shaming Michigan, not cursing bad luck. If anything, be mad at Izzo and Sissoko if the Ayo injury is the true issue. Obviously I dont want to understate how much Ayo’s injury sucks, but injuries are --and always have been–a part of basketball. What’s never before been a part of basketball is maneuvering through a pandemic while prioritizing player safety–so I just think he sounds like such a hack when he complains that Michigan should have prioritized Illinois schedule rather what’s best for Michigan, in these unprecedented times.

Gonna be even sweeter, then, when Michigan pummels them on the hardwood.

I have read that Underwood quote 10 times, and I still don’t know what it means. Context might be helpful. But then, I don’t even know what “sending some subs” means, so maybe it’s just me.

They’ve lost too many games for his complaining to be credible. But he’s right to get his gripes in now; if they lose Tuesday further whining will really sound like sour grapes.

I don’t disagree…I am more on your side of the issue than his (for certain), I just think it’s relevant context that most Michigan fans seem to not be considering. It doesn’t make him right, but I think we’d be bemoaning our luck, and many people would be looking for scapegoats, if the roles were reversed.

(somehow posted the above twice)

Gosh, wonder what political playbook he got that from?

Typo by whoever tweeted it originally - sending some snubs, it’s not part of the quote BU said

This is straying perilously close to feelingsball commentary, but…

This season has been more difficult than any in a long, long time. It certainly looks like the stress of the pandemic combined with the extremely tough competition has taken a heavy toll on some teams. Minnesota seems to have collapsed. Indiana is shell-shocked. Wisconsin is teetering.

Juwan Howard is going to get some Coach of the Year recognition partly because he, his staff, and his players have succeeded in keeping his team’s spirits high. Of course, there’s the chicken-and-egg question of whether the team is winning because of good feelings or feeling good because it never loses. A nice riddle when it’s your team that’s doing all the winning.

In the same vein, you need to commend the leadership of teams that have not collapsed, despite going through very rough stretches. One of these is Maryland, whose fans seem determined to never give Mark Turgeon any credit for anything. Yes, the schedule got easier, but it’s one thing to play Nebraska and Northwestern and another to actually beat them. Your team has to show up and play, and Maryland has continued to do that all year.

Another team that has recovered from the bottom nearly dropping out is Rutgers. Pikiell getting his team to focus and play hard (if not well) has been a recurring theme in his tenure.

And, well, you knew this was coming: Despite our most fervent wishes and hopes, Sparty has not given up on the season. This is not Izzo’s best team or best coaching job, but they are still out there believing they can beat top teams - in multiple senses of the word beat.

I read it as “subtweet” or “subtext.” Saying something that’s clearly about someone in particular without saying it directly.

Michigan state isn’t good. They beat OSU somehow. Good for them. Then they mauled Illinois and got away with it. They still played ugly basketball games those games with atrocious shot profile. Not even remotely worried about them other than the refs letting them get away with murder.

All of the comments from national writers and MSU fans about how whatever 6 seed gets them will be so mad and it’s just hilarious to me that 2 games supposedly cured all their ills.

Not even 4 minutes in and Izzo is losing it.

11-0 start for MD. Keep it up.

Good start Maryland! You already made Izzo scream and humiliate a player on national TV!

Don’t know what Izzo is upset about – beautiful symmetry from his team so far. Every starter is 0-1 from the field, 4 of them are 0-1 from three.

That Ayala shot missed by about 3 feet!
