Interesting Athletic article on Kelvin Sampson and Indiana (Paywall).
There were 19 Fs on players’ academic records in early April of that 2007-’08 season; they would eventually cut that number to 11. A couple of players were strongly suspected of dealing drugs. There were roughly 30 flunked drug tests throughout the season. There were several thousands of dollars in unpaid rent. And that’s only part of the story.
Impermissible phone calls might have been the least of Sampson’s problems as he led a once-proud program into the ethical abyss.
“An athletic disaster,” Crean once called it. “A greater challenge than I’d ever imagined.”
Sometimes when a candidate’s name comes up I just like to get a little savor of the person, make up my mind about some of the intangibles on my own. Keith Smart ‘presents well,’ I’d say:
MSU was in the 11/11 play in game. Going to OT would seem to have been a fairly expected outcome of that game. OSU losing was a huge upset. Wisconsin up big. Purdue needs to turn it on in the 2nd half. Illinois rolled.
