As much as anything it just shows how Hard it is to be Wisconsin levels of consistency if you’re not a top 10 program
The five-game sample for Purdue is a little ugly. One net-scorching blowout of Oakland, one medium performance against Liberty, one comprehensive loss to Clemson, one panicky survival against Valparaiso, and now this 20-point choke against Miami.
Overall feels fitting for a roster that I would describe as gimmicky.
That’s fair. Personally I put faith in Painter to make the team greater than the sum of it’s parts, but that hasn’t happened yet. Maybe once Hunter starts playing more and gets into a groove? But that seems like a big ask.
As noted, Painter has already had one rough stretch. If I remember correctly some people were wanting him out of town. Obviously bought some goodwill since then given their success. Last year was rough, this year doesn’t seem promising and if next year isn’t improved you have to wonder how secure he would be. Fantastic coach, seems very personable but will be interesting to see how this goes.
I agree that it’s their best chance for a well-rounded centerpiece. Entering today, their best offensive player was 0/4 on 2pt FG for the entire season. Mike Smith has half as many 2pt makes in four games this season as Stefanovic has in his entire college career.
That was a terrible choke job. You can’t even really play the road game excuse.
I wasn’t watching super closely but the Purdue boards are roasting Painter for keeping a bunch of timeouts in his pocket.
Purdue would be insane to think about getting rid of Painter. A couple down skids at Purdue in over a decade of being the coach is not fire able
Dylan said precisely this in the podcast. After this loss everyone will think Purdue is the worst team of the country, and in a month they will beat an Illinois or Iowa, and suddenly, they are decent again
Maybe Fletcher Loyer will save the day for Painter
IIRC he has never been at risk of being fired, rather he flirted with the Missouri job
I haven’t listened to the pod, and losing to a top 50 KenPom team on the “road” doesn’t seem like a bad loss, but blowing a 20 point lead to that team without its best player paints a different picture.
Purdue has a good recruiting class coming in.
While I was watching, I kept thinking that Purdue needed a MAAR or Methias-type; someone to either drive just once and make or a three that was a run-killer. I swear that needed to happen just once in the middle of Miami’s comeback to shake the narrative. Maybe it’s the beer.
Iowa is about to destroy UNC imo.
They’re missing a 5 star too.
Personally I think Purdue will turn it around.
I am surprised that wheeler hasn’t developed into a star. What I saw in glimpses in that run his frosh year I thought for sure he was going pro and was gonna be a real problem for two or three years.
Interesting. I actually thought Unc might pull this upset.
Weiskamp and Fredrick
UNC looks like hot garbage in July.
Iowa and UNC are two high speed transition offenses going at it. Probably going shoot every 5-8 seconds
