Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Man and MSU fans were so confident that not only would Emoni be around, but he’d reclass and play 2 years at MSU

I’m telling you what, the FIRST time Izzo got in the face of Emoni Bates, it would be over! Not to pile on Izzo, but I’ve seen him in action in practice, let alone games, and unless Tom just decided he was going to handle Bates with “kid gloves” it WOULD happen, and then, it seems from this recent evidence, that relationship would be over. Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but if you think Tom is bad in games, and I do, he can be worse in practice.

KT, I don’t think that was ever going to happen, but ya, Sparties can be pretty delusional! But then, other than umhoops guys like all of us, Michigan fans can be, too!

I am the least delusional fan in the USA thank you very much.

btw I am sticking to my prediction that Eli Brooks will win B1G POTY.

Yep, I would guess Akins will be enrolled at either IMG or Montverde by Monday!

There’s a guy replying to this thread saying it isn’t true. But he won’t say what did happen or what the truth is. But he’s very adamant. Seems 100% that Akins is off the teams so I guess he’s arguing the circumstances behind it.

I’ve made a couple of comments on here and perhaps I shouldn’t have…until all the facts are in, but if what we’ve been hearing is true, and knowing what I think we know about the Bates’ entourage and their “handling” of the young man, I really don’t blame this as much on the kid as I would blame the dad and those who are surrounding the kid. Having coached for a long time, and I loved my parents for the most part , when you have a problem attitude wise with a kid you know where that attitude most likely came from. I’m just gonna stay out of it now, at least until we know more!

Could the commit Akins teams up with be Bufkin though? There’s a relationship there

When I was coaching MHSAA would simply not have allowed him to be immediately eligible. In fact, I believe he’d have to sit out a full semester which would be next semester, too. That’s why I think it will be Monteverde or IMG because Florida’s rules are probably much less stringent.

Fair enough, and @mgl as well. I was sort of more commenting on the on-the-court stuff, and didn’t make that clear, but obviously there have been some overall low-quality humans to have matriculated through Izzo’s program.

I don’t know that Mo belongs in that Valentine category. He loved to get under your skin, but Valentine was one of the last Sparties I remember that really just loved to run his trap the whole damn time a t nobody in particular and before he’d actually did anything on the court. Don’t recall if he grew out of that during that transcendent senior year he had.

LOL @ Nick Ward memories. What a meathead.

GR Christian is a “real school” whereas IMG and to a lesser extent Monteverde are sports teams that offer classes. IMG and Monteverde are also boarding schools and GR Christian is not, so it would actually be harder for him to relocate there even though it’s 45 minutes away.

I can’t see Izzo having someone on his team that would take as much of the spotlight away from him as Bates would.

But don’t forget Charles and X…I think they had lot’s of dog in them!

I meant in the early Beilein days when he played a majority of 1-3-1 zone, was still running a variation on the Princeton offense, and 2/3rds of his recruits were suburban Midwestern kids who could dribble and shoot but not play defense.

Don’t think we ever played a majority 1-3-1 or ever ran the Princeton offense

He may be intelligent, but a lot of the kind of comments cited here suggest a guy just missing the DNA that goes with magnanimity, with emotional generosity–very thin-skinned, and not self-aware enough to avoid embarrassing himself with such revealing statements. Not the end of the world, and he has obviously won basketball games. Just don’t ask me to admire him.

Maybe majority is an exaggeration, but those early Beilein teams played a lot of 1-3-1 especially when things weren’t going well. And we never played a true Princeton offense but the original system Beilein brought from WVU was a variation on it.

Max Christie is level headed and seems like a good kid too.

I have seen Max interact with my (much younger) son at AAU events when we go to watch Illinois Wolves games between my son’s games. Without boring anyone with detail, Max seems like a phenomenal kid.
