Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

lol…I guess that’s technically true. I have no memory of this person you call Lorbek and missed him in the below chart because he didn’t play in the NBA and didn’t even list a “class” in his MSU profile where I was looking for “Fr”. I had to look up an article about him - guess he was an early departure who would have been a key player. (link)

Is this under the idea he plays next year because MSU wanted him to be in this recruiting class.

Here are the mpg for the top C recruits in the country

Dickinson 25.5
Cisse 19.5
Mobley 33.9
Sharpe 19.8
Kessler 6.4
Kepang 10.5
Williams 10.4
Jackson 20.7

I didn’t include Maker/Ettiene for different reasons. I think it’s honorable that he wants to play 25 mpg but unless your name is Mobley or Dickinson nobody in the class this year is approaching that.

How many guys from the 21 class is going to play 20+ mpg?? Chet but nobody believes he’s a C. Bittle at Oregon going to beat out Kepang?

We are talking about a guy who obviously is a high major recruit and possiby wants to reclassify when it’s not very common for bigs to get 25 minutes a night right off the bat. I don’t see the minutes of these recruits differ that much from highly touted guys like Jackson Jr/Ward/Davis.

If Bediako decided to attend Michigan do you think he’s getting 20 minutes a night?

The funny thing is that I spent all off-season saying that Dickinson was going to be lucky to get around 20mpg for at least the first half of the year because freshmen centers tend to suck and take too many fouls. I even trotted out data similar to yours from past years and past Michigan centers - going all the way back to Juwan to find someone who played a lot right away.

Welp…shows what I know. I guess having one of the most talented centers in Michigan history as the coach helps overcome some of those freshmen obstacles to playing time.

I think Juwan and Saddi did a great job at drilling not to foul on Dickinson. Dickinson did a great job of keeping his hands up high in which he used his height/length advantage to bother shots and can still block shot without fouling.

I wonder how they’ll teach Moussa since Moussa can do more things for them defensively and protect the rim. I wonder if they’ll do less drop coverage with him on the floor since he has the athleticism to switch onto guards.

Somewhere in between the “eye test” and “stats galore” is a happy medium for truly understanding a player’s impact. Count me as a TJD fan, everytime I watch him play I see tons of potential. But I certainly haven’t seen every one of his games, to your point. Not sure anyone should submit to that level of pain in watching every IU game, UGH! And I certainly won’t complain about whoever makes the 1st team B1G this season, unless Michigan finishes really strong and our guys are left off the first team. Only time I ever complained about the B1G 1st team is when DWalt was beat out by Nate Mason. What a travesty!

I have no doubt that coaching is a factor, but I think Dickinson deserves a ton of credit too. He is such a smart player, and he always seems to know where to be. I also think that his almost non-existent leaping ability helps him avoid fouls. It seems like he finds jumping pointless, and at his size I’m not sure he’s wrong

MSU had the first game in total control until a late, miraculous comeback by Purdue. The Spartans remember the sting of that loss and they’re going to come out tonight dominating. I like MSU by 35 points tonight, 105-70.

Agreed. If anyone in the league can score 105, it’s MSU.

Izzo subs Kithier in for Bingham at the 5 after 1 minute and 37 seconds.

Had to either double or sub out Bingham after those first couple of possessions

AJ Hoggard is about to turn this season around

Did you? I get that they scored twice, but then Kithier just goes out and gets two quick fouls. None of their bigs are good, but playing three of them in the first four minutes doesn’t seem ideal.

Feels like there was zero resistance on those Williams postups… Like it wasn’t decent defense. Bingham just getting bullied. I think they have to double, but subbing is better. You can’t give up easy layups every time down the court.

Loyer checking in. Isn’t he injured?

Now he checks out. Six minutes in and MSU is on what, its fifth lineup?

It’s incredible how many players are in the rotation. I’m sure it helps the players get in a flow when they are doing subs after every whistle

Every time I think I’ve seen the worst game of the year…

Keeping the minutes down will have their players fresh during the ncaa tournament.

God these teams are pathetically bad on offense.

MSU resolves to end the scoring impasse by giving Purdue the lane.

EDIT: Flood of five points ensues.
