Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Bohannon as 1st or 2nd says everything as to the value of the metric.

I think 5 losses would mean we miss out because we’re not going to get the full 20 games. Meaning we’d lose it to Illinois or OSU if either went 15-5 which I think would be likely in the scenario where Michigan lost 4 more games.

Even 4 losses could be tricky if we lost to Illinois. In that case Illinois would have to lose 2 more games in order for us to have a better win%.

The guaranteed route is beating Illinois and finishing with no more than 3 losses. Obviously the Illinois game is massive.

The downside of (most likely) playing the fewest amount of games is that we’ll always lose the win% battle if we have the same number of losses as Illinois/OSU

Beat Illini and OSU and Michigan’s path for the regular season title is a lot clearer.

NVM I was looking at season long not conference only.

That has to do with how poor they have played though. I don’t think it has to do with “competition.” Izzo will run his best out there if they are good players. Eg. Tillman was stapled to the bench year 1 only 8mpg, got up to 24 as a soph, 32 as a junior.

Jackson played 21mpg as a frosh and probably would have played more if not for his ridiculous foul rate.

Nick Ward played 20mpg right off the hop

Costello worked himself into being a 20mpg guy

Deyonta Davis played 18mpg as a frosh and left

Enoch shouldn’t have many issues being able to get 15 mpg as a frosh if he was there. I don’t believe he would truly be in competition with Sissoko or Kithier.

I understand what you are saying but unless you watch every second of every conference game you are really only using your eye test on parts of seasons for players and you are likely going to overrate and underrate certain players. For a while Jaden Ivey looked like an All American every time I watched 5 minutes of a Purdue game. Then I realized he actually misses lots of his circus shots.

May I present to you the minutes played by Jaren Jackson Jr in the last ten games of his freshman year: 19, 13, 22, 14, 18, 31, 15, 24, 18, 15

Had just returned from gassing up the car and was momentarily shocked at how few miles per gallon MSU players were getting. A program in long-term decline.

His fouls in those games: 3, 4, 0, 3, 4, 1, 5, 4, 3, 3

The game he had 1 foul he played 31 minutes, the game he had 0 he played 22 and scored 27 points in a 30 point MSU win.

I don’t have the time or energy to go look at each specific game to understand circumstances but it was obvious at the time that JJJ was being underused. Izzo absolutely has a history of underusing talented freshmen.

I don’t think he’d be satisfied with that? He’s a guy who views himself as a 1-and-done who wants to start and play 25+ minutes.

Seems like there are two questions:

  1. Are you that good? He seems to think he is.
  2. Will Izzo give you that opportunity if you are good enough? Seems uncertain.

I’ve wondered about 5-stars who reclass and consider themselves 1-and-done. Are they even eligible after one year of college based on their age? Do they reclass knowing that it means they may struggle more as a younger player the first year and reach their potential in a second year?

I tend to think that the actual center depth chart shouldn’t scare him if he’s as good as he’s ranked and as good as he thinks he is. I could see Izzo begging him to reclass and telling him that he’s the key to fixing their issues at that position. For all the grief we like to give Izzo, he runs an elite program and develops players.

Now, from afar and my biased position as a Michigan fan, my advice to Enoch as he’s considering MSU would indeed include:

  • They need help at center…you could be it.
  • They have some elite players coming in to turn things around, don’t let one year bias you too much
  • Izzo does tend to like conventional post players
  • Izzo is going to have a family atmosphere and if you can tolerate his approach to berating players, benching players, humiliating players on national TV…you’ll love him forever. But it won’t be easy.
  • MSU has only produced three 1-and-done talents in 20 years for as good as they’ve been. JJJ, Davis, and Randolph. How were they used? How were they developed?
  • Right now it is fair to ask Izzo about his rotations at center with 5 guys sharing 40 minutes. What will that look like next year?
  • It is also fair to ask about the depth chart if you want to reclass.

If anyone wants 30 minutes of enemy fans’ reaction to the Boakye decommitment, I chatted with DK from Spartan Hoops last night on our pod. I also forced them to submit to 20 minutes of me singing Michigan and Juwan’s praises on the second half.

Michigan stuff starts around the 37th minute.

Marcus (?) Taylor was a one and done for MSU as well.

That is Ant Wright’s point. Why would he compete for minutes with 5 other bigs when he can go somewhere else in a 2 man rotation where he’ll play 25+ min a game as opposed 10-15 min a game?

I agree with you and it’s a big factor on why Enoch decided to de-commit

Marcus Taylor actually stayed two years. I also thought he was one and done, but when I was looking at old MSU seasons I saw that he was a sophomore in 2002.

Wow, I was wrong there. I must be getting old, thanks for the info!

Lorbek was one and done, wasn’t he? I remember Izzo constantly complaining the next year about that.

Good call on Lorbek, his only season was 2002-03.
