Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

I’m curious as to what Maryland is considering all the memes about them being better on the road.

65th home, 54th road/neutral

This would be a HUGE win for Maryland. Would get them to 5-9 with NEB/NEB/@RUT/MSU/@NW/PSU left. Those are all winnable.

Honestly I think Turgeon is a solid coach 🤷🏼

Seperate question, any chance Livers could play his way onto the first team? It’d be criminal if Michigan doesn’t get someone on the first team.

Feels to me like a situation where Michigan has 3 second teamers.

Yeah probably, but that’s dumb

But it is also why Michigan is good.

I think in the past his talent level to result ratio has been bad. You don’t want to judge too much on tourney results due to the randomness of the setup so I’ll ignore that for the sake of this, but no top 20 Kenpom finishes in his first 5 Big Ten years had me shaking my head with some of the rosters he had. Last year I thought he was fine, and this year I think his coaching has been fine too, but his roster situation is obviously due to him, so you can’t ignore that.

I think the 2016 year made me biased against him. That roster was crazy good to me at the time (looking back, I still like it a lot) and it was kind of a fart of a year, finishing 22nd on Kenpom, 3 games behind Indiana in the Big Ten, and getting blown out in the sweet 16 after close victories against #80 and #60 in the first two rounds.

If Turgeon can get Maryland to the tourney this year despite being projected as a bottom 3 BIG team in preseason and with the conference being super deep, I’d think this would be one of Turgeon’s best seasons leading the terps

Knowing the all BT teams don’t care about positions, where do you have the players power ranked right now? I am skeptical we will get three guys on the second team. I think Hunter is on the fringe of 2nd/3rd if I think like the voters.

Garza
AYO
TJD
Carr
Trice
Wagner
Livers
Dickinson
Liddell
Kofi
Harper

He also had his best team yet last year and didn’t get a chance to do anything in the tournament, for better or worse.

Either way though, my point is kind of that guys that underperform a bit based on talent get really bad reputations. When assembling that talent is half of the battle. And in game wise he’s never been a Pitino or anything to me, he just doesn’t necessarily develop talent super well and/or has had poor roster construction.

Most B1G coaches could never get the talent he does

Trice is a second team guy at best. And likely lower if Wisconsin keeps losing

Well yeah, that’s why I complimented his last two seasons lol.

He’s not Pitino or Chris Collins, but his name is just fun to use as a negative verb.

“You really Turgeoned that, man.”

I agree. That list wasn’t in order, just contenders. Can you think of anyone I forgot? Williams will be third team probably.

He’s also in a pretty good situation to get talent.

I think he’s a top half big ten coach if you consider everything that goes into team success, but I also don’t think the Big Ten is super loaded on coaches or anything. I think the board has had a pretty in depth discussion about that already though, so no need to dive back in.

You’re totally right that he’s not comically bad though.

I prefer that he would stay away from B1G conference. My heart can’t stand to see him on the opposing bench

Oh yeah it would be brutal for me too, no disagreement there

Fair point about being screw out of a shot with his best team, but still that is his only top 20 Kenpom team in 10 years at Maryland, and he hasn’t had a top 10 finish, though last year’s might have gotten in. Only three top 25 Kenpom team in 10 years. He’s in a frustrating spot where they clearly have enough resources and a great local recruiting base to be doing better, but he’s also not doing so terrible as to be quickly fired.

Minnesota is within 6 now, Maryland looking like Penn State did earlier today.
