Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Rutgers team wide hot shooting to start the year was rather inexplicable based on the career shooting numbers of their players. It was a bunch of mediocre shooters that were all having career hot streaks at the same time. They have since all cooled off.

In Rutgers first game of the season they shot 1/8 on 3s. Over their next 8 games they shot 67/165 (41%). In their last 9 games, however, they are 47/174 (27%).

The team wide insane hot shooting has swiftly and strongly reversed course.

Wisconsinā€™s defense with Iowaā€™s offense would be a hell of a team.

Yepā€¦ just slightly better than Michigan  . Good thing that is hypothetical and Michigan is real

@buckets12 I didnā€™t realize you were the intern running the Iowa basketball Twitter account

The problem is I would 100% make that post, but it would be made with a certain level of sarcasm. Whoever posted that wholeheartedly believes they have the best wins in the country.

Looks like those five wins were against Rutgers (2), UNC, Minnesota, and Northwestern. Iowa truly slaying the giants.

EDIT: (Checks Kenpom)ā€¦ Well, none of those teams are in the top 25 currently. But Iowa does have a win over #22 Purdue!

Hey, when you can beat ranked Minnesota, Rutgers x2, and Northwestern, you do it!

(Never mind Michiganā€™s two ā€œrankedā€ wins over Minnesota and Northwesternā€¦)

Martelli also wondered if weā€™ll see teams opt not to commit to playing in their league tournaments ā€“ both really good and really bad ones.

ā€œI read something about the basketball committee or commissioners putting out to teams: hereā€™s our constitution, you canā€™t just ignore the constitution by not playing,ā€ he said. ā€œI donā€™t know what that means, I donā€™t know if thereā€™s penalties ā€¦ but if thereā€™s a last-place team, what are they getting out of this?ā€

Rescheduled games: Why hasnā€™t the Big Ten announced yet the rescheduled game dates for games that had been postponed?

Not sure if posted but some serious rumbling in maryland circles that turgeon may be headed back to wichita state. Nate Oats would be pretty scary at maryland.

Does Oats have a tie to Maryland? If Iā€™m him I continue winning in the shitty SEC and wait for a better job than that.

Interesting. I think Maryland is a pretty good gig. Itā€™s almost certainly a step up from being in the AD/sports fandom shadows down in Bama, even if the path to wins consistently is a little more uncertain.

Alabama isnā€™t bad cause it does not have high expectations, doesnā€™t care about anything recruiting wise, and pays well. Oats already is only a couple 100k behind Turgeon, and Iā€™m sure he could swing a raise from Bama using any open job as leverage. I mean Alabama has enough money to do whatever they want, even in basketball. Add in an easier conference and I can see why someone would stay at Bama if they have no prior connections to Maryland

I think itā€™s a decent gig but I also think itā€™s one of those ā€œfans think the program is way better than it actually isā€ jobs. They have a nice tradition and itā€™s a good spot for recruiting but it definitely wouldnā€™t be in my top ten jobs in the country and probably not top 20. Thereā€™s also the not-so-small matter of trying to win in the Big Ten versus the SECā€¦

Of his own volition? Jeff Ermannā€™s article said Damon Evans might be willing to fire him but Maryland has no money.

I would agree that Maryland is a pretty good gig. Turgeon gets grief for not having long tournament runs. He shouldnā€™t be raked over the coals for what heā€™s done in the Big Ten.

I seem to remember BQ saying it might make sense for Turgeon to leave if he had the chance. Wichita would make sense if he has the opportunity.
