Not that surprising I remember how Brendan Quinn was saying last year at b1g media the players were sort of in awe of juwan. He just had a different presence than the other coaches.
Certainly not as surprising as someone voting for Chris Collins Also telling that the fan narrative that we see here a lot about how miserable it must be to play for Izzo is ⌠off the mark.
I will just say this one bit, it is a lot easier to swallow getting yelled at if you are winning. Izzo wins and that might be part of that equation.
It also should be noted that you dont have a bunch of disgruntled players transferring out - his antics during the game are probably about as bad as you get. I get the feeling that it can be the opposite for other coaches.
Just two different thoughts along the Izzo lines
I donât get itâŚother than the winning part. My son played a game last week and the other coach was screaming at his players the entire game (wellâŚuntil we got up by 20). He was pulling the Bo Ryan move of subbing out anyone who made a mistake immediately, chewed them out, then subbing them back in.
I donât mind coaches being strict or tough, but humiliating players just doesnât work for me and I canât believe Collins got any votes and that Izzo is so universally loved.
Unless you see how that coach interacts with his players during practice and off the court its impossible to judge their relationship. I had âniceâ coaches I wouldnât cross the street to speak to and I had guys who would call me names that would get any coach fired today that Iâd take a bullet for.
Yep if you just look at how willing players are to stay a extra year there and how involved the alumni are youâd know that narrative about Izzo isnât true. The loud screamy coaches get put into that box but itâs often not true. Bob Huggins may be the ultimate one and the majority of his former players just adore the guy and loved playing for him.
In the athletic players poll piece I was surprised that so many kids said they were planning to use the extra year of eligibility. Wisconsin is about to get everyone back arenât they?
The idea that most players would just want to âmove onâ never made sense to me. Some will, others will be told they donât have a spot, but playing D1 sports is an awesome experience. Especially with todayâs extended adolescence, I donât see a ton of 22 year-olds eager to give up basketball, put on a shirt and tie and get to work.
Is what it is. What Izzo does works, no matter what we may think of it from the outside.
If that doesnât sum up whatâs wrong with the culture youth/amateur sports, I donât know what does. In what world is that considered an acceptable or even remotely necessary thing to do?
I hinted at that being a thing a few weeks ago on here and got laughed off the forum. Wisconsin might have their exact same team again next year lol
Well for most of the P6 kids they wonât be putting on a shirt and tie when they go to work, theyâll keep playing basketball.
I think their bigs may leave, but if Trice has stuck around this long he might stay. And where is Davidson going pro? Scary thought. Teams like Wisconsin in both football and basketball have this assembly-line type of program so why not?
I legitimately do think Izzo treats his players like a family off the court. Heck, in some ways thatâs probably why the scandals off the court have happened for that program - he is a little too protective. And maybe that relationship makes up for the on court behavior for most players. We also donât know how he acts in practice where maybe heâs really candid with them about how heâs going to develop them and that may mean tough love.
But in this day and age I am surprised that a player hasnât been fed up enough with being screamed at on national television while his coach is being restrained that he quits the team or outs Izzo for practice behavior. Shoot, Henry might end up with the thickest skin of anyone after the way his career has played out for such a talented player.
Early takeaways from Nebraska-McNeese State:
- BTN already has a broken score ticker
- Lat Mayen is the best shooter of all time
- 45 on McNeese State is probably the first guy this season to play while wearing a mask
My takeaway: that fake crowd noise is veeeery distracting if you start to notice it. No variance in it from offense to defense or during free throws or anything. Just a constant buzz.
uhhhh
I donât have access the the article so if anyone could TL;DR it that would be great, but if Watts is genuinely behind Loyer and Langford that canât bode well for MSU long term
Itâs what you would expect. Watts has tremendous talent but needs to figure out how to play point guard.
