Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Poor word choice, my bad. My point is that if the schools say they are taking all the necessary precautions – which they say they are – then you’d think they’d do more than just assume a recovered person is permanently immune. Immunity is believed to decline over months. Some of the team had it in August, some in December/January. So that’s different.

Odds are they won’t get reinfected - at least, not within the next few months. Studies suggest that the short-term reinfection rate is in the neighborhood of 1%. They’ll still have to follow protocol though.

But saying ``well there’s nobody left to infect so let’s go" isn’t part of a protocol. Or, if it is, it’s possibly not a good protocol. Not the same level of risk when you’ve had it last month or 5 months ago.

Also worth remembering that some newer variations are more contagious, so there’s a chance reinfection rates could be higher with that. Part of the problem with the new stuff is the same as it was with COVID originally, which is that we don’t know nearly as much about it because studies take time and are more likely to be inaccurate in the beginning. That’s why slowing the spread was always going to be so important, and is important again. It’s less about stopping a spread than it is about buying time to learn more, as well as keeping hospitals and supply chains from becoming overwhelmed.

I think it’s just a real confusing time. I don’t see why MSU shouldn’t be playing if everything checks out, same with Purdue on Friday. Nobody on Michigan has the virus but they can’t play…

I think that Dylan brought up an interesting point during the last Podcast on the Brink(Indiana based podcast) about how Michigan might have gotten screwed early in the season when they only played 2 games in a 21 day period. I think we were all expecting a shutdown to happen for at least a week or 2 during the season, and not playing games when you had a chance doesn’t do you any favors.

My understanding, limited though it may be, is that reinfection is indeed possible but hasn’t been found in less than about 90 days. So they are probably okay for reinfection for at least the next month conservatively.

Then again…information is changing every day as we learn more. Hell, Nick Saban tested positive early in the week and then somehow coached the game later that week. Still haven’t figured that one out.

I thought that was a really good point he made there. I also liked the idea of moving games forward he talked about. For example, was looking at Iowa’s schedule and from last Thursdays game to next Thursday they only have 3 games. Should be looking to move games into those open windows while they still can if they want to play a full 20 games and end on time.

Yup I totally agree with that. What I think is INSANE is that the NCAA is still holding tight to their March Madness schedule. Like, why the heck do you not move it back to April to make sure everyone can do their conference tourney and then quarantine. Do they really think that CBB will lose steam if they wait too long? Absolutely crazy.

I hear ya! I’ve been on team May Madness all along. At this point April should be able to get a legit season and tournaments in.

For anyone hoping Michigan would back early from this… The four games are postponed and Big Ten is making other adjustments to the schedule.

Nebraska getting big time national appeal with a game on Super Bowl Sunday!!!

Well hopefully they’ll get a chance to practice then instead of getting thrown quickly back into games.

At this point I just hope we get a couple extra practice days for Illinois

They don’t want to move it back twice. There’s not enough benefit to moving the dates now when you can’t be sure they will work.

I totally understand that, but you want to give the highest chance for it to work with the best teams though right? I feel like the way to do that is to not delay it too much, but also give them the safest route to do so. If you give an extra week to play catch up and do the conference tourneys then give 10-14 days for quarantine, you would be set to play the first week of April. I feel like this is a no brainer for the NCAA.

At this point, is the expectation that all four postponed games will be made up eventually? Or is that way too early to say still.

I wonder if Dylan or Ethan is sleuthing around, trying to find out how the team stays in touch/tries to stay in shape–keep their shape, as they say in soccer–under these circumstances.

If the plan is to reschedule all of them that would be 11 games from Feb 11 through Mar 7. So, 11 games in 24 days by my count…

After these 2 weeks of lockdown, we will have 4 total postponed games at that time.

Is there any way to play all those games if the Big Ten Tournament isn’t cancelled?
