Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Yeah, that’s our normal schedule. I would think we’d do one on Monday. It’s the second pods of the week that get dicey.

Although I get to see two AwEsOmE football programs go head to head Monday lol

Their guard play was already awful this year. Who starts at PG for them? Sotos? Jallow? Johnson? Move Washington over?

All of those seem like horrible options.

Is Jallow really an option there? That would be like playing Charles Matthews at PG

I would guess Sotos. Walker has been atrocious this year but he does play 80% of minutes…

I have no idea, but that’s how bad their options are. He plays more than Sotos now and is guard shaped. Maybe he’s an option to play major minutes at the 2 if they slide Washington to the 1.

I was on the RU bandwagon all off-season and season, and directly said I think they’re better than OSU. I can explain away the loss @ OSU since they collapsed after Johnson fouled out with no Omoruyi available. The MSU game is making me tap the breaks on RU right now, but if they can’t beat this OSU team at home Saturday I’m fully slamming the breaks.

Yeah I agree that sliding Washington to 1 makes the most sense. I just don’t know who to play beside him. Their roster is 8 dump trucks plus Walker and Washington.

To further push back on my own vote for Sotos…OSU is 12th nationally in TO%. It is the most important ingredient in their offensive efficiency. They can’t shoot worth a lick but they hang onto the ball and draw fouls and that’s that.

Walker has a 52 FTR, best among starters and second-best on the team, and a hair under 20% TOs. Sotos has 3 FTs all season and a near 30% TO rate. If they start him their offensive identity takes a hit.

Heh, in conference play Sotos has only six shots (1-1 2-pt, 0-5 3-pt) and three FTs (3-3) in 19% of minutes. Any increase in his playing time probably will not go well.

I guess that would explain why Walker plays so much. Well that and the fact there isn’t any other viable point guard options.

I just really don’t like this Ohio State team.

I agree, something about them is just wrong. I think a big part of it for me is their offensive numbers not adding up. I simply don’t see how you can be called a top-10 offense if you can’t make shots.

I think we’re going to start seeing teams reveal who they really are over the next couple of weeks. Coaches are going to have a lot of video on everyone, there’s no surprises any more, regression to the mean both ways is going to settle in, etc. I think if we did a power-ranking check around then it might look pretty similar to one in the pre-season.

  • Wisconsin - Stock Up (they’ve had bumps…should settle in fine)
  • Iowa - Neutral (they are who we thought they were)
  • Illinois - TBD (looks up, but still sum isn’t matching the parts)
  • Michigan - Way up
  • Minnesota - Down (I think they’ll settle back in a mid tier as you can’t build an offense around FTs)
  • Maryland - Down (I think they are a better version of PSU - scrappy, some talented wings…not enough)
  • Northwestern - TBD (was way up…now the book is own and we’ll see how they respond)
  • Rutgers - Falling (I think they were riding a shooting hot streak and will struggle to score)
  • Indiana - TBD (No one scares you but TJD…is that enough?)
  • MSU - Rising (Izzo/Watts narratives aside, they’re not likely to struggle all season)
  • PSU - Falling (try-hard team that would compete in a lesser conference)
  • OSU - TBD (Still can’t figure them out yet…good coach bad roster?)
  • Purdue - Falling (Nothing comes easy for them with this roster)
  • Nebraska - lol… (sorry, maybe next year)

Looks like they are a dominant shot volume team. Never turn it over and get lots of ORebs. Makes shooting just a way to get an offensive rebound. So losing Walker could be NBD since they don’t shoot well anyway, or crippling because his absence leads to a drop in TO%

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the OSU message board contingent wants Meechie Johnson unwrapped early in the wake of the Walker injury. There is zero chance Holtmann does it, though – Johnson reclassified and enrolled early in December following Abel Porter’s medical retirement. He has barely played 5-on-5 in two years after his ACL tear. He is listed at 160 lbs. And his composite ranking was #123.

A few extra days to prep for Wiskey at home is just ducky, no?

I agree with basically 100% of this. Job well done. In fact I wonder if there is really quite a bigger gap between the top 4 and everyone else. Almost like there is no Tier 2. Iowa could be Tier 2 by itself as I could see M/Wisconsin/ILL being quite a bit above them.Good stuff!

McCaffery has a blowup with his team not even 2 minutes into game.

And takes a second timeout 3 minutes later. Pure Fran!

I’ve seen this movie before. Maryland will end up losing by 20+

I think Keegan Murray should start in place of McCaffery and take his minutes.

Turgeon had a 10 pt lead, made a hockey-style line change, now down 10. Whoops
