That’s an interesting point, and not something I’d thought much about. Michigan surrounds Dickinson with a few long wings (3 of them if Chaundee is in the game). But Illinois is basically 4 guards around Cockburn/Giorgi. Would think Michigan is the more versatile team on defense because of that.
Chaundee would exclusively play 4 if he was on Illinois whereas he’s a 2/3 for us.
An aside I just noticed, Michigan has some of the worst FT defense in the country.
I think the only potential upset here is NW at home. I like Nance in this one, as I don’t think they have anyone to guard him. But I added the lines to make it a bit more of an adventure.
I think some of that can be attributed to Dickinson’s foul aversion. Most teams are generally fouling the opposing team’s bigs, who are generally poor FT shooters. Hunter doesn’t foul, so most of the opposing team’s FTs are taken by guards and wings, who are generally better shooters.
And then also hopefully there’s some bad luck on our end there too.
To be fair I think most teams of no chance of surviving him. To me beating Iowa is more about outscoring them than shutting them down. The best plan, what we saw Michigan do last year, might be to let Garza get his and just shut down everyone else. Try and score 80 and make Garza meet you there himself.
Who will they even put on him? You can’t play Smith and Marial at the 5 for 40 minutes even with a favorable matchup. Against Garza that’s pure tanking.
I saw some speculation last night that the B1G may move some games around (including our game vs Wisconsin to Saturday) to allow for PSU to make up all their missed games easier. Anyone know if this is a real possibility, or just uninformed speculation?
I think once again the answer is let him get his, and try to go small with Scott at the 5 and exploit Garza on the perimeter. Beat his 2’s with your 3’s.
Yeah I’m sure there’s a coach in America who could make it work but I don’t trust Turgeon to pull it off. I have a feeling he’ll start Smith as usual and concede a 10-0 start.
There’s a big difference between leaving Teske 1 on 1 with Garza and whoever Maryland has to fill that spot. Teske had his struggles of course but he still made Garza earn it. Not sure Scott can do the same. Maryland will definitely have to pick their poison, but I’m guessing Iowa will pick it for them if Garza is anything close to his normal self.
Not sure but I don’t think we’re recording today. MSU plays tomorrow and no Michigan game this weekend, so not positive we’ll have a 2nd one this week.
