Becoming a New Dad and Watching Michigan Win a Title

I know everyone in here is a huge Michigan fan and has their own personal story. My daughter was born two-and-a-half weeks ago and I got to share this title with her. This is my experience as a fan and Dad. Please enjoy and share!

Well done Josh. Whether Sloane becomes a Michigan basketball fan or not, I know she will enjoy reading this when she grows up.

Congratulations! That would be amazing. You’ll have to check back in about 18 years after Dusty May leads the program to another 5 titles and is getting ready to hand the program off to Coach-In-Waiting Will Tschetter

My son is 6 and for the first time this year took an interest in watching the basketball games with me. He was always asking when is the next game? It made the season and especially the tournament extra fun. I let him stay up late to watch the Final Four and Championship last night

My 4 y/o jumped up and down on the couch when I told him Michigan won the championship last night.

“Yeah Michigan!!!”

He doesn’t really understand what’s going on during the games (when I can get him to look up from his monster trucks and dinos), but he gets excited whenever he sees the block M.

My wife and I watch several games a year (football too) with my 4 kids, 3 spouses, 7 young grandkids (3-4 will watch every play—2 of them already play hoops and football in elementary school). What a blast these last few years! Thanks Dusty and Jim.

My son was 8 in 2018 and I made him go to sleep early with the promise I’d wake him up for the game. He saw Divencenzo go nuts. This year I spontaneously decided we were going and it was the best decision ever. Saturday night was incredible. D2/D3/NIT championships Sunday were a pleasant surprise. And then seeing the team send-off at the hotel followed by a championship late night was the chefs kiss. Very special!

My second daughter was also born during this run. She’s off to a good start as a fan as she had the sense to be born a day early so that we would be able to watch the SLU game in the hospital the next day

congratulations to all new dads. i took my kids to 2018 final when they were 10 and 13, it is very memorable as my daughter last night sent me a photo of her brother crying after we lost that year.

My first child, a daughter, was born literally as the Big Ten Tournament Championship was tipping off this year. We lost that game, but I obviously had something that was able to keep my spirits high and busy for the immediate aftermath.

My wife and I got her a Michigan onesie that she has since worn for every Michigan NCAA tournament game, and only for those games. I have a picture of her wearing it every game, and we obviously won every single game. As she’s obviously growing out of it, I’m getting that Michigan onesie framed to keep alongside the rest of the memorabilia for this tournament run and this season to keep that memory of how happy and blessed I’ve been over the past month or so on basically all fronts in my life.

We can take that offline. Can’t share this with the wider UMHoops community…

No surprise here but I absolutely love this thread. Great stories that I loved reading. Whether it is sports or something else there is nothing more rewarding than having a special bond with your kid(s).

I saw Dmb son once over the entire weekend, about 2 hours prior to tip last night. I don’t know when it happened but at some point this year I cared more about Michigan winning for him, than Michigan just winning. And while I never got to see him during or after the game I knew exactly what he was feeling while the game was going on and again after the game ended. I truly couldn’t have been happier for him. To the new dads on this board jump into something with your kids. Even if it isn’t something you care much about it will be worth the bond you create.

My son is a reverse jinxer like his old man. I asked him if Michigan would win or lose the Arizona game. He said lose. I played The Victors yesterday morning and he said no daddy, don’t play it. But when the game was over he said Michigan, Go Blue!
