2024 Olympic Basketball

Yeah good draw for US. Serbia is not easy but I’d rather play them than Canada

While there are obviously plenty of bad contracts around, it seems reasonable to let the “market” sort out this type of jumble. Franz’s contract would put him somewhere around 20th, or top 5%.

This line of logic leads to a lot of absurd results for lots of obvious reasons. I don’t know why we should think contract details add information we don’t already have outside of a few very specific circumstances.

The first K-stat tweet-quote I’ve seen here. My message board worlds are collapsing…

Off the top of my head i could probably name 40-50 better players whether it’s based on current performance or if they have a more proven pedigree. Eg. He would be the 3rd best Celtics player. I don’t think Horford is better than Franz but good chance Al Horford is a HOFer. Maybe Franz gets there but thats early…

So does Ben Simmons’

I think saying Franz is approx 40th makes sense

I had him like 8th at his position? It tracks!

Ben Simmons objectively doesn’t play basketball

I framed it as a secondary metric to unjumble the middle (while admitting there are outliers). I don’t see any reason given yet why that doesn’t work directionally.

Pedigree isn’t relevant to this discussion.

40 is top decile in the NBA…far above the middle. Works for me.

It has to work way better than directionally bc we already have lots of directional metrics! And, like, there’s not much real sense in which “the market” is operating on these contracts. There are a ton of constraints on them.

Well Paul George was brought up just saying. Is Jimmy Butler better?

Confused why a black and white metric, while imperfect, has to work “way better” than directionally when it was introduced to sort out throwing your hands up entirely. Seems like one clear indication that Franz is viewed at the top end of that jumble you referenced.

Overpaid guys above Franz on the list only make Franz upwardly mobile in rank. But I’d also say that given Franz’s contract is brand new, it’s relatively high fidelity. Over time, performance and value diverge but right now, it’s a clean indicator.

If Al Horford is a HOFer, then I am a better singer than John Legend.

Then Franz?

Is this real?

It’s not useful to add contract data to the various metrics and commentator consensus except in really really obvious situations where lots of teams can openly bid on a pool of players and this happens less and less and less with the way the CBA works.

We talked earlier this summer about that group of veteran wings that various commentators felt were clearly underpaid and pretty much got ignored by teams who preferred largely to just save the $$. That’s probably a sign that, actually, they’re not as good as those commentators think. Or at least it’s a nudge in that direction. Maybe the teams are just being cheap! We can’t tell yet.

So it’s just not specific enough to use in the way you’re suggesting at all. These aren’t market prices. Much of the point of the CBA is to set onerous restrictions on how these guys get paid.
