Bummer man, just as I was becoming content with the season the rest of the Big Ten’s here to remind us we had a top preseason ranking and “recruiting class” so we should be disappointed.
Maryland was not what I had in mind. Maryland is never what I have in mind
So we equaled the furthest run and lost to the highest seed of all the B1G teams in a 15 loss season.
I’d actually raise that banner if offered.
Absolutely. Not making the Final Four means this team is a failure due to preseason expectations. And not only that, but even if they made the Final Four, it would have only been because they had an easy path.
If you were, say, ranked top 15 in January, and then lost in the round of 32, it’s actually more impressive because preseason ranking is the only thing that matters.
Fair enough, I just think at most someone forces SH to sweeten their offer and make certain commitments. I think SH has been the target for him ever since his college career ended.
Was looking through old posts to try to find when I jumped out of Painterville. I didn’t find that, but I did find a version of @silverblue that we NEED to see return.
Ivey stat line pretty brutal but feel like he wasn’t put in good situations. 6 TO maybe not defensible. I dk, I’ve just never felt like this Purdue team made a ton of sense together and that’s still where I land. Guys who can’t be better than the sum of their parts.
I was just marveling at how he’s the face of the tourney right now
It’s funny that Painter got to the Elite 8 after that, but this year has got to be a pretty black mark on his ledger. That’s a lot of talent and mismatches to only get to the Sweet 16.
This Purdue team not raising a banner of any sort is more disappointing than Beilein’s final team, right?
This is a great off season debate and topic and Michigan has it’s share of questions to answer but at a high level I think pretty much every other B1G team has serious questions to answer regarding their performance in March. Not just this year but over the course of a number of years.
Fran and Painter pretty much have proven not to get the job done in the NCAAs, Holtmann and Underwood aren’t far behind. Izzo has a reputation that doesn’t match reality and was salvaged by Cassius. Gard’s crap only works in the B1G.
Feel like this could be a whole podcast episode in itself trying to put together why the league sucks in the NCAA and how it gets better.
Without Maryland hiring Willard, the Seton Hall job wouldn’t have even been open
NCAA tournament wins since hiring Howard:
Howard 5
Painter 2
Gard 2
Underwood 2
Izzo 1
Nah. 13 on KenPom (them, this year) vs. 6 on KenPom (us in '19).
Yeah, but once it became available, I think the odds on both sides were about 100% it was Shaheen.
Sure but I don’t think Willard was on the hot seat or anything… and I also don’t think he is a hot name coach where better schools (besides Maryland) would have tried to hire him. So Maryland could have had Shaheen for the foreseeable future
Bruce Weber is probably throwing stuff at Bill Self on his tv
Oh, I see what you’re saying. Yeah, but I think MD made the hire right before Shaheen would have been a legit candidate for the MD opening. And the Willard hire was clearly in the works well before that.
They have the top talent in the league with Ivey, Edey and Williams. But Edey and Williams are one player essentially and they negate a lot of what makes Ivey so good. Like was said above, Ivey would be at another level in a 5 out system.
Then the supporting cast outside those 3 really does leave a lot to be desired. Sasha not shooting the ball well doesn’t help there and the rest of their roster seem to be okay pieces/just guys
You left out a word (“wins”) but that’s a great stat.
