There’s a pretty straightforward path to 10 more mil now though I think
I’m all for it but I’m baffled a 2025 first round pick is Jerami Grant’s return. On the surface it looks like we just got rid of an asset for nothing. Jerami Grant averages nearly 20 points a game and plays excellent defense; the Bucks are going to be a playoff team in 2025. What the f#ck.
Here’s hoping there’s more to come.
Cap space can be used to take on bad contracts while getting picks as the incentive to take on bad contracts.
There are a lot of sweeteners to move up tomorrow if they love a guy.
It doesn’t HAVE to be space to sign free agents.
I’d rather take on Gordon Hayward’s dumb contract to get Charlotte’s pick before I would use that space to sign Ayton.
I am not sure I can be convinced that Miles Bridges is a winning player either.
Now if they want to go all in on Brunson? Sure
Grant couldn’t get it done being ‘the guy’ on a team and didn’t get it done playing next to ‘the guy’ in Jokic so not really sure where his value is besides dependable fantasy starter.
If they end up with Charlotte’s 15th pick, Gordon Hayward and an extra 2025 first from MIL for Jerami Grant and whatever small thing they send back to Charlotte that’s a pretty good outcome
Well, being, like, the fourth or fifth option on a contending team is probably Grant’s role. Miami, for example, could absolutely have used Grant against the Celtics.
I respect the list but I disagree with a lot of your rankings IMO.
If you actually mess with the numbers, we don’t have as much cap space as people are saying we do. Assuming we renounce some obvious players, we have about 20 mil in cap right now. So we sign Bagley to a starting salary about 10 mil. Then we have 39 mil. You can get to 46 mil by cutting Hamidou, Frank Jackson and Garza.
Realistically, this moves lets us pursue Ayton without cutting various other pieces on the team and that’s probably its primary purpose.
I get it, but I’m not happy about the return. You could argue it’s not much because it’s an expiring contract but if anything it’s a team friendly contract Portland is getting for a year as it gears up to contend. Pistons gave Grant away for peanuts.*if this is all that happens
Grant went to Detroit to be ‘the guy’ but his skills are really more valuable on teams where he is the 3rd option and a good, versatile defender. That’s what he was with Denver when they went to the WCF. Wiggins did that this past year. Kawhi is a better version of that type of player. Good wings who play good D are obviously really important for contenders.
It will be interesting to see what the Pistons do with the options in front of them. Good young players, draft picks, and cap space. Wowza.
It was reported it was their best written offer dating back to the offseason/ trade deadline. Grant was more valuable to the fans than the actual teams that were trying to trade for him.
I don’t disagree really
I feel like that line in the Edwards piece is so intentionally vague because it’s not necessarily the best offer available. Or how you interpret that cap space might dramatically alter what you view as the best offer.
Wasn’t it reported at some point we were being offered Josh Hart + 16th for Grant?
And just reported that Blazers are trying to trade #7 for OG Anunoby. He’s worth #7 but Grant is worth a box of scraps 3 years down the line? Yeah I don’t buy that.
The Piston’s Athletic guy said this was their best concrete offer. I am sure their were a lot of reported rumors better than one they got.
He claims, it was their best real offer. Perhaps he is carrying water for the front office. I don’t follow him closely. I know the Tiger’s beat guys other than the Athletic guy sure do carry water for Al Avila, so I am going to hope young James has some journalistic integtrity, and is reporting real information.
I agree in principal that the rumors are most always more juicy than the actual return.
Everything on the internet isn’t always true is it?
If that actually happens, have at it.
No chance it actually does. We shall see.
It says everything about my limitations as a person who thinks good that my first thought was “welp, time to scrape basketball-reference”
Usually, something this direct is a precursor to something finishing up shortly.
