2022 NBA Draft Discussion

It would be incredibly Kangz to let the existence of Davion Mitchell on their roster persuade them to do anything differently.

Attending is very different than watching. All of the video is there. Not sure what that really changes.

Kangz is either trading the pick or taking Murray at 4. Ivey at 5 would be the dream scenario for the Pistons.

Only played 12 games in HS and 12 games in EYBL which is a small sample size to go off from.

OK. All I can say is that Givony’s comment was “Sharpe’s breakout came out at EYBL, where most GM’s don’t go - just scouts. That may be holding him back.”

They already let his existence force them to trade a superior AND YOUNGER player

I am not sure how you could watch Sharpe’s film (I watched 3 full games plus clips – not a huge sample but satisfactory, imo) and come to this conclusion. I would say “competitive” would be one of the very last words I would use to describe Sharpe’s defense. Flashes of excellence? Sure. But his motor was… inconsistent and he is very passive on that end.

He also missed a ton of passing reads, sometimes simple ones. He will have to improve significantly as a playmaker (which is possible).

I think Sharpe still has the potential for some very high level outcomes, but those would be two of my biggest criticisms of his game. To be fair, it is EYBL and high school, so the defense can and will be better because he has good-great tools – I just disagree with that evaluation based on the film.

Side note from that post: I really enjoy Dyson Daniels.

Lol yeah and he’s one of two good things to happen to that franchise in a decade? Oof. Reinsdorfs may be bad but they ain’t that.

If we take Ben Mathurin over Keegan Murray I will be in shambles

Here’s the list of shooting guards/undersized small forwards listed between 6’5 and 6’7” that were drafted between picks 6 and 14 in the last five drafts:

James Bouknight, Moses Moody, Chris Duarte, Josh Primo, Devin vassell, aaron nesmith, Jarrett culver, Tyler Herro, Romeo Langford, Jerome Robinson, Malik monk, Luke kennard, Donavan Mitchell

NO THANK YOU. Take the 6’9” guy with an elite jumper.

CC: Ben Mathurin

There will be a lot of stat-minded guys in the room saying “how many guys looked as good as Sharpe in EYBL that we don’t have lottery grades on” and I dk how many will be heeded.

Not even down on Sharpe but think it’s weird to give him a top 5 grade given the washout rate of all but the tip top HS prospects. Of which you get, I dk, one every other year? And Sharpe didn’t seem to be that unless I’m misremembering?

I can buy Mathurin upside if he can improve his ball handling but I don’t think he’s slithery and is kind of stiff.

A lot of people are touting Sharpe’s 3 pt % in EYBL/HS but Ivey shot 43.6% in EYBL. I will say that Sharpe’s form looks better than Ivey but it’s hard for me to project Sharpe as a great shooter since we haven’t seen him shoot in higher level and against better defenders.

Not sure what these players have to do with Mathurin. Are you saying you can’t draft a good SG after the top 5 picks? Obviously Mitchell is a great player. Herro is really good. Vassel and Duarte have shown some ability early in their careers. And the newsflash is: most NBA draft picks are not great players. There have been busts at every range of picks. You could fit almost any narrative you’d like. Like I could start saying Keegan Murray is a rich man’s KZ Okpala, but that wouldn’t be fair either.

Who is your Murray comparison?

Detroit is drafting at 5, so taking Mathurin wouldn’t put him in the 6-14 range, so they are good to go.

Also, Keegan isn’t 6-9 and if you did the same exercise with forwards in that range between 6-7 and 6-9 you’d get studs like Corey Kispert, Obi Toppin, Jonathan Kuminga, Ziaire Williams, Cam Reddish, Rui Hatchimura, PJ Washington and Kevin Knox. So … I guess Detroit is in trouble no matter who they draft.

Mine is Danny Granger, just not sure which point of his career.

Granger was a great player in his prime so I’d be thrilled with that as long as Murray doesn’t get injured and have his career tank after that

I just think the 6’6” shooting guard archetype that isn’t considered elite enough to be a consensus top 5 pick is usually a reach.

Did 6-14 because the consensus top 5 in this draft doesn’t include Mathurin and the Pistons are about to take him over Murray anyway. Reeeeeach. Just don’t get the pick. If you want safe floor guy it’s Murray anyway. If you want upside and Ivey’s gone it should be Sharpe.

A guy who isn’t gonna create offense or anchor a defense is a bad pick at #5
