2022 NBA Draft Discussion

I really can’t believe Hunter came back if everybody else good left.

Generally if a player shuts down workouts or doesn’t take an opportunity to go to the combine they are either a locked lottery pick or have been given some sort of promise. It’s informed speculation based on past NBA drafts

Trying to keep an open mind here…hoping he’s coming back and realized that he could do better.

I don’t see upside of passing on the combine if you’re going pro as a fringe prospect and I don’t see why any GM would be throwing around promises to fringe picks.

Such an odd turn of events. Maybe he’s hurt?

Sounds to me like a lot of speculation and, as I read it, it has quickly elevated from “maybe he got a promise” to “he got a promise.” And the thing is no one who is doing all the speculating knows Caleb, or his family, or what is in his heart or what he is thinking.

If Houstan got a promise it makes a lot of sense to take it and sit out IMO. I don’t anticipate he would show out well in that setting outside of shooting drills

Fair enough. I’ll take my L.

Which begs the question, what GM in their right mind is making a promise to Houstan? Seriously. We’ve all seen the mocks. His composite place is 56th last I checked when surveying 8 of the most respected mocks.

I understand all this if his draft position was much stronger, but unless there is some huge secret we don’t know about him, this is bizarre.

How much access do teams have to the workouts taking place right now? Maybe he’s really showing well?

“What gm in their right is making a promise to the guy we’re begging to come back so he can be the 2nd best player on what would then become a top 15 team”

What NBA team is giving Houstan a promise to draft him after the season he just had? It really defies all logic in my opinion

Guys don’t make the big money until a 2nd or 3rd contract though. Nice money to be guaranteed but that same team can make another guarantee the next year to another guy.

I get that…it just makes no sense to give him a promise. In fact, promises are stupid if you think about it. The only way you can really be sure of a promise is if it is “if you fall to us we will draft you.”.

If he were in demand, why not try to go higher and get a better spot? If a team has to promise you, they feel pretty good you’ll be available by the time they pick. Is that a compliment?

Also, what if some other player drops a bit…is that team going to honor their promise?

Just odd…sort of like the Patriots in the NFL draft this year - grabbing guys way earlier than any other team would have taken them.

For this to feasibly be a promise situation - you have to think a team in the late 1st round is doing the promising. First round is a guaranteed contract. Second round is not (although most drafted through 31-50 do end up signing some type of guarantee).

I guess the only other thing I can think is that a team in the late 2nd round promised a spot and a 3 year guaranteed contract - which I think would be pretty unprecedented at this point.

Otherwise, I just don’t get why Caleb would accept a second round promise with minimal guarantee of a contract (or partial guarantee, etc.).

Yep. Michigan isn’t an NBA team. Would fringe Garza make Iowa better if he came back all those years instead being pick 56 or whatever he was? Of course.

The same GM who saw him in the Worlds and thought he was a lottery pick.

Givony is definitely tied in with the Houstan camp and not being shy here

The guy had a reputation for an elite shooter, and he did that at UM in the home games. I just don’t find it that hard to believe that one NBA team wants to take that risk and made a promise.

Caleb marches to his own beat, and he didn’t come here with thoughts of playing for a second year. If he got a promise, good on him. Bad for us.

Yep, done deal I would say.

But why would that mean Murray is going back to Iowa?

Yeah, it seems to me that Murray is the steal. Under the radar twin brother that was hurt previously. If you could get discount Keegan in the 2nd round, thats where it makes sense to have a promise to keep that under your hat.
