2022 NBA Draft Discussion

Why would Sharpe’s high school graduation status be an issue for the NBA draft eligibility? I don’t get it.

You have to have been a year out from graduation to be eligible

A year out from graduation or a year out from the age of graduation? I didn’t think the NBA required a diploma.

Wiki says they need to turn 19 the year of the draft, nothing about graduation.

U.S. players must be at least one year removed from high school and 19 years of age (by the end of that calendar year) before entering the draft

He is a year removed from High School.

A year out from graduation or a year out from the age of graduation?

The earliest of those I presume.

One year out from graduation (or supposed graduation) and 19 the year of the draft. the question for Sharpe would be what that year would be. He was a C/O 2022 originally, presumed graduation of 2022. He obviously graduated early enough to enroll at UK but question would be when did he graduate then. This says May of 2021 so he’s good to go.

At least that is my understanding.

Yeah, exactly. As proved by his HS diploma

I just don’t see anything specific saying they need to have graduated.

I see references to the graduation date of their class, but that’s not a statement on their own personal graduation.

I don’t think he has to graduate but he does need to be a year removed from graduation or being out of HS. The diploma date proves he will be a year out.

Yeah I think the diploma is just to provide the NBA with tangible proof of being a year removed. Because he was a late decision to reclassify and enroll at Kentucky.

The number of times that it seems like Dream City Christian, transcripts and diplomas seem to come up in the same conversation is definitely interesting. :face_with_monocle:

I was also going to ask - this presumably implies Kentucky may have enrolled a student who didn’t graduate High School. I realize they’re fast and loose with the rules there, but this seems pretty brazen even for them.

Is it a glorified diploma mill?

No, I think the question is whether he graduated in the spring or the fall. He committed and enrolled at Kentucky late. This article is from November:

Sharpe plans to graduate from high school early and enroll at Kentucky after the fall semester.

So, if he graduated in the spring why was he enrolling in the second semester and why did he “plan to graduate” from high school in November?

Between them and Compass Prep how many quasi-school basketball academies does suburban Phoenix need?

He enrolled at Kentucky in January of 2022. https://twitter.com/itsAntWright/status/1517153696311697409?s=20&t=Tf5tpsbGR1-6xJWbS092pA

Basically, he graduated in winter of 2021 and they’re likely falsifying the transcript now

Ant talking in Green Room about how he saw Shaedon Sharpe play live in person for Dream City in December, lol.

He definitely played in televised events in October, but I assume those aren’t real scholastic games because they are before the season so are “club teams” or whatnot.
