More interesting is this dynamic… which feels like a slippery slope.
hes a former juco player so even if um had a spot he’s a no go for um
I loved Iggy and really wanted to see him come back. Kudos to him for landing at least a 2-year deal (though I’m fuzzy on what’s guaranteed and what isn’t). Here’s what is interesting when you think about Michigan guys testing the NBA…
Compare Iggy, Livers, and Blanchard sometime. They are almost all the identical size, similar athleticism, very similar stats in college, and vastly different outcomes when it comes to the NBA. Iggy left early with “potential” in the eyes of the NBA, got some money, may or may not actually get a chance. Blanchard stayed four years, never got more than an NBA tryout, played overseas a bit. Livers is currently testing the water without much buzz but clearly he’s interested.
Really wish there was draft-and-follow for the benefit of the player, the school, and the NBA.
Because my Blanchard love knows no bounds I’ll make the totally unprovable argument that he would have made a roster in today’s NBA.
I think the similarities to Iggy are very relevant. Both were…
- About 6’7" and 215 pounds
- Both were average athletically
- Both could shoot from the outside
- Both were aggressive but not ball dominant
- Both were decent rebounders
- Neither had an ideal NBA position
I think in today’s NBA if Blanchard leaves early (i.e. the NBA thinks he still has untapped potential…whatever that means) he probably follows Iggy’s path. He is a 2nd round pick, he gets a contract, he spends a ton of time in the G-league, and then we’ll see.
Iggy was so good for Michigan. This past year I keep wondering if he would’ve returned where Michigan would’ve been if they had him with Wagner and Livers. I think they’d have been one of the best teams in the country.
Nice player, loved him . I agree with others he was in the wrong era. Just missed it. Thought he’d get to the nba early in his career, was kind of surprised
Iggy would have made last years team really really good. I think they are one of 6 or 7 teams that would have been a favorite for the final 4 with him.
I think he’d have been a 19-20 ppg scorer. He averaged 16 on really good percentages last year with Poole and Matthews. This past year he’d have been the guy without a doubt. I keep reflecting on his game and man he was talented. Not a lot of flash, just got straight into getting buckets and did it with swagger.
I’ve said before that I think he would have potentially been an All American
At a minimum he would have helped us survive the Livers injury and let Franz ease back into the rotation after his injury. He is still limited as a 1v1 player so I’m not sure if he would have blown up like Stauskas did, but he would have definitely been fun to watch.
I think he could have developed that. He was running some PnR in the GLeague highlights I saw, although I only saw highlights so I cant speak to the efficiency. He averaged 3 APG in the GLeague which is a lot considering he didn’t even average 1 per game the year before
I don’t even know if he’d make major leaps in that. He was just so good at getting buckets and another year of development would’ve enhanced that. Juwan also playEd at a higher tempo which means more possessions and opportunities by default. Iggy I’m sure would’ve improved in the PnR and playmaking some but I just think the volume of shots regardless would’ve went up because Matthews and Poole were gone. He was elite at just putting the ball in the basket and he didn’t shy from being asked to do it. He looked forward to it. Extra burden probably would’ve suited him just fine.
If Iggy isn’t gone, is Beilein?
Yes. They had nothing to do with one another by all accounts. Was JB tired of the grind of developing players for them to only leave? Yeah. But Iggy didn’t send him over the edge or anything
Hmm…I don’t think it is quite that black and white. I tend to agree that he was probably gone anyway because the Cavs job opened up, they made him an offer, and he was already looking. But I think you diminish the effect that Poole/Iggy leaving “before they were expected to” had on Beilein.
I think if Iggy tells Beilein he’s staying it at least gives him pause. Run it back one more time with senior Simpson, senior Teske, Iggy, Livers, and Franz? He might roll the dice one more time for a Final Four before leaving this year with more of a clear exit strategy.
“It was a number of different events that made me feel I had no choice but to transfer from Georgetown. I really wanted to stay, but things throughout my career made me realize that I couldn’t.”
This is why the waiver process is dumb and needs to go away. Him releasing a vague statement like this gives him a better shot at a waiver? Just let everyone go.
The better shot at a waiver part…that is just the writer’s opinion. I would be shocked if it was true.
Waivers are stupid and arbitrary and bad
There will be a few lawyers specializing in getting these waivers. MacClung’s approach has already been successfully tested. Citing specific reasons that can be contested didn’t work as well last cycle, one only need look at James Hudson complaining about Michigan’s treatment of his mental health issues. He was the only transfer from Michigan last year who had his appeal denied.
There’s no reason to volunteer information. If the NCAA insists on more, it can be added to the request. If the school isn’t contesting the transfer, it probably won’t be needed. In a pandemic, it’s highly unlikely players will be forced to prove how uncomfortable they are.
