2020 Recruiting Notes

Well, there are a couple of ways the staff can play it with regard to the Class of 2020…
…traditional model says fill up on Freshmen
OR
…current transfer portal leaves the option to fill a couple slots with transfers and bank scholarships for the Class of 2021.

Things tend to work themselves out, but a realistically ideal class would see Wagner join the Class of 2019, Zeb Jackson plus 2-3 others in the Class of 2020. A Grad Transfer entering for 2020-21. Then go big with a full recruiting cycle on the Class of 2021.

I think if Juwan can land one big 5-star(ish) level guy in 2020, more will follow quickly

I agree completely , but with most of the top talent in 2020 taking a wait and see a approach to Juwan as a head coach there won’t be much time for the staff to prove themselves before the majority of these guys commit. And really with the roster as it is for next year I fear they won’t be able to prove much anyways. I feel like the program is really in a tough spot right now with roster for next year and then recruiting with likely middling results next season due to the roster

A significant part, I’d say the majority, of 2020 recruiting will take place between now and November – before Juwan Howard has coached a game.

He’ll recruit based on how he recruits. Just like everyone else.

Circumstances be damned!

I’m just saying that it isn’t too late to recruit 2020 kids. Maybe too late to recruit certain ones but there are plenty of great prospects available.

Exactly. Relationships can be formed over the summer.

Get in on and build strong bonds with Burnett, Steward, Barnes, Kessler and a few others over the summer.

Have them in for football games in the fall. We’ll get some kids in’20z

Plenty of time.

It’s bizarre to me that anyone would suggest that Howard doesn’t have a great shot at an excellent 2020 class. There is a long list of guys Beilein got in on later in the Summer or Fall (Livers, Castleton, Simpson) and kids are deciding later and later. They’ve just started to evaluate so I’m sure will identify others.
It’s one thing to throw out early 2021 offers to kids who aren’t committing any time soon but with the 2020s, they need to be a little more careful in terms of where the put their efforts.

I’ve seen Garcia play several times. He scares the crap out of me as a prospect, in a Cam Reddish kind of way. He’s very talented but there are times when he disappears, which should never happen with his size and skill set.

Juwan and Saddi were at BCAM today. I was there as well. Lots of the top players no showed. Only ones of note that could be High major there were 2020 Clarkston 7 footer Matt Nicholson, 2021 Pierre Brooks and 2022 Javaughn Hannah off the top of my head. Izzo, Fife and Garland were there as well. Jalen Terry player too. Cincinatti, Xavier, Butler and Northwestern has assistants there as well for high majors I seen.

That’s interesting you had all that high major coaching staff around and no one there. I haven’t followed all the changes alluded to with recruiting but is that why these coaches were around. When my nephew was there around five or six years ago it was nothing like that. If BCAM can get these guys every year that event would take off with talent.

Most of them were expecting Isaiah Jackson, Lorne Bowman, Jaden Akins, Kobe Bufkin and Julian Roper to be there but none of them were.

I’m not up on the 2020 kids like past classes. Is he big time?

Collier? No. Three star recruit, but does have Syracuse and Maryland offers, so maybe he’s due for a bump.

Martelli guy, seems like?

Let’s go get him and Wagner
