Thanks for posting that.
Interesting that he mentioned that Michigan will make a move for DJ Steward rather than Adam Miller. All of the National guys have mentioned Miller as the primary Chicago target for Juwan.
I mean I mentioned Steward as well several times. Itās only logical Juwan would go for the best players in Chicago, and Steward is right up there with Miller.
I didnāt take away from that a preference for one or the other, though I may have missed that.
This is Stewards high school coach reacting to Howard getting the job
I mean you gotta also remember Tai Streets played football and basketball at Michigan. As a alum, him holding out on Juwan, a fellow alum and former Michigan basketball player and Chicago resident would look really bad for him. Juwan may be one of the few people who can freely recruit both AAU programs without getting scorn from one program or the other. Beilein could only recruit Meanstreets successfully and not Mac Irvin for instance. Iād think Juwan should have a very good relationship with both organizations.
Why couldnāt beilein recruit mac Irvin?
Beilein was voted the cleanest coach in basketball several times.
Idk the exact reason but I know Mac Irvin didnāt want their players going to them. They wouldnāt literally block them from being recruited by Michigan but theyād try to avoid them being pursued by them. Theyād nudge them anywhere but Michigan basically. Would ignore texts or calls by Michigan coaches and just made life a hassle for the staff to recruit players they already are facing a uphill battle to land. As long as Juwan recruits both program relatively equal I think he should be able to stay on the good side of both programs. Iām not trying to insinuate stuff but also, what @tarverine said. Juwan should have no issues recruiting both clean though because heās a beloved former player.
Early signs seem to point to the Chicago aau programs and CPL sort of rallying around Juwan. Hes the only former CPL player that is a HC at a major program.
Yep. He should have a bit more leeway recruiting Chicago than most coaches because heās a Chicago hoop legend. A alum of one of the big programs (MAC Irvin) , and he went to the same college and played for the basketball program like the owner of the other big organization (Meanstreets). Hopefully it means these organizations will let him skip the politics or most of it at least. Iām sure it will help him. I donāt think these programs would do Derrick Rose dirty if he was a coach, so Iām guessing they wouldnāt mess with Juwan Howard either. If the owners were younger then maybe, but the owners of Mac Irvin and Meanstreets are plenty old enough to remember Howard.
Beyond these things, being tight with aau programs and prominent high school coaches makes it much easier to get kids up for unofficials as they are often the ones providing the transportation.
Absolutely. That was kind of another thing I meant regarding why Mac Irvin was impossible for Beilein to recruit in the past. They werenāt willing to help kids do visits. Theyād say they were too busy or make excuses for the players. Those are things Iāve heard coaches or programs do when they beef with coaches.
Didnāt Poole play for Mac Irvin? Might have already been committed to Michigan, though.
I thought it was Wisconsin Playground. Itās where Tyler Herro played too I believe. Herroās team was the last one because they were always such poor EYBL teams.
Scooby played for Mac Irvin up until 15u as well.
Thatās insane. AAU politics sound like the worst. Glad Iām generally ignorant of them
Poole played with Mac Irvin for a bit in 2016
If you had any idea how petty grown ass adults could be about kids and their own selfish reasons youād wanna jump out a window. Itās a whole ānother world in AAU and recruiting.
Thinking about our new staff/recruitingā¦

Right off the bat, Howard should be a hit in Chicago and Florida (Miami, Jax, Tampa, Orlando, St Pete). Hopefully in Detroit as well. Hopefully heāll be able to eventually extend to a lesser extent across the Midwestā¦ Ohio (Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Cincy, etc.), Indiana (Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne), Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St Paul, etc. Maybe heāll even be able to extend up into Atlanta??
-
Martelli should right off the bat give us a nice presence in the Northeast ā¦ Philly, NYC/NJ, Boston/New England, DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, etc.

Saddi helps shore up the rest of Michigan (Flint, Saginaw, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, etc.)

Miller is probably more of a Sanderson-esque general development pitch.
