2020 - F - Jaemyn Brakefield (Duke Commit)

Rough. Juwan flies out to see him on Wednesday and then Duke pulls a Duke the next day.

what can you say

what kind of relationship was there before the offer? Had they been regularly contacting him, or did he just feel like he needed to commit ASAP to get a spot?

We’ve had our implants, nails done, hair and makeup, but the hottest babes are still taking our studs. Another Friday night alone.

Worth noting, he’s very close with Jalen Johnson, I believe. They play on the same AAU team and I think are both from the Wisconsin area. Johnson was recruiting him pretty heavily after the offer. Johnson also plays with Mark Williams at IMG Academy.

And yes, Duke wants to take two bigs in this class.

Any other 4’s / big wings on the radar beside Todd? (who seems unlikely)

If they somehow land both Dickinson and Williams, they will have 2 centers in the same class that are both likely multi-year players. And also Brakefield/Coleman as 4s in the same class and they are both multi-year guys. Whoever doesn’t earn the top spot in the rotation is going to be short on playing time for awhile.

An additional issue is that since none are of the one and done variety, they will likely be recruited over in future classes by future lottery picks. Good luck young men.

Where’s that tweet about top 30-50 recruits choosing Duke being a terrible idea?

Yep the thing is to, Coleman and Brakefield are pure 4s and Williams and Dickinson are pure 5’s so it’s going be really difficult to get 3 of them on the court at the same time.

From what I understand, they don’t have any other 5s on the roster.

I get why Duke wants two Cs, but let’s say both players are at least 3 year guys. At least one of them will only play 20 mins/game or less for 3 years. Not sure a high four star type player would be thrilled with that. But as we all know, recruiting is often illogical.

Here are four-star duke recruits ranked 30 or worse in the nation, and their minutes per game as freshman, since they started chasing one and dones (ie, starting with Kyrie’s class):

2018/19: Joey Baker (37) - 4.5 mpg in 4 games played
2017/18: Alex O’Connell (69, nice) - 10 mpg in 36 games
Jordan Tucker (59) - 7 mpg in 2 games
2016/17 - Javin DeLaurier (36) - 7 mpg in 12 games
2015/16 - Chase Jeter (32) - 8 mpg in 32 games
2014/15 - none
2013/14 - Matt Jones (34) - 7 mpg in 32 games
Semi Ojeleye (32) - 5 mpg in 17 games
2012/13 - Alex Murphy (49) - 6 mpg in 31 games
2011/12 - Quinn Cook (31) - 12 mpg in 32 games
2010/11 - Josh Hairston (32) - 6 mpg in 27 games

that 2 NBA players, one of whom (Semi Ojeleye) needed to transfer out (to SMU) in order to get drafted

The odds here are that Brakefield won’t be at Duke for long, or will never really play

Hairston stayed 4 years but never really cracked the rotation.
Cook is the one exception here - 4 years, spent 3 years starting and scoring double digits, made the NBA
Alex Murphy transferred to Florida, then Northeastern
Ojeleye transferred to SMU, made the NBA
Jones was a 4 year role player, but he did get minutes starting his sophomore year
Jeter went to Arizona, where he was in the rotation last year, starting 26 games
DeLaurier has gotten 12 and 16 minutes per game the past 2 year and is a defense energy bench guy
Jordan Tucker played 22 mpg for Butler last year
O’Connell got 14 mpg at Duke last year

both DeLaurier and O’Connell are likey bench/role-player guys in their 3rd/4th seasons

Joey Baker was not mentioned at all in 3-Man Weave’s season preview, but he’s there.

The way it’s setting up, it really looks like a depth class for them. There’s 1 top 10 guy and a lot of 25-50s. OAD guys are much much more likely between 1-24 than 25-50. A lot more like the teams Kansas had been building than what they’ve been landing lately.

Yup. These guys may get some time next season, but it’s a depth class for sure. If they land another elite OAD class the following year, those dudes will pass these guys right by.
