For sure. There are tons of examples of talented freshmen playing complimentary roles on really good teams and then getting drafted high. Corey Maggette (going back a long time) being a prime example. Or Zach Randolph.
I am starting to wonder if Todd is having trouble being academically eligible. I think Word of God in Raleigh has had issues before with there accreditation. Also, ensuring all requirements are being met in this final semester amid this COVID-19 thing might be tough. He has bounced around to a few different schools so some core curriculum may have fallen through the cracks. Just as Michigan is hard to get in for a grad transfer, it is no cake walk for undergrad. Just posing the idea that this may be the factor.
Also, during this COVID uncertainty, I am not sure when he would have had an opportunity to visit or flip his commitment somewhere else. He has never wavered that Michigan is his school so would guess that it isnt another school luring him away.
As far as overseas, it is hard for me to see that coming to fruition right now. As we saw with Cliff Omoruyi, staying close to home is more of a factor than ever before. I also find it hard to believe that any international teams are trying to make moves to grab a raw 19yo out of America for a one year rental.
Extrapolating from my hypothetical narrative above, it would make sense that he is using " " in his profiles because he may not have any current prospects to play basketball in the fall and everything fell through.
All just my conjecture
Reading this thread and the recent comments by LA and buckets I canāt help but thinking, and I wrote a version of this eons ago before he committed, that Juwan is the PERFECT coach to guide him through this and the perfect example for Isaiah.
Juwan was a five star coming out of high school, too, and was in fact rated higher than either Christopher or Todd. He played as a freshmen on an iconic team that contended nationally, and yet there were two players on that team that were considered to be bigger āstarsā at the time. There were returning starters on that team that he had to contend with for minutes. Juwan, himself, was an NBA talent who played in the NBA for 19 years and coached there, too. Isaiah Todd just could not find a college coach who could be a better example and role model for him than Juwan Howard.
What Isaiah Todd decides to do is up to him and his mom. Itās their decision, but if he goes to college, Juwan Howard and Michigan is about as perfect a landing spot as one could imagine!
You have good instincts.
Damn, thatās rough
I thought of this nswan, but discussing academic eligibility is a pretty sensitive topic that can bring out the hot takes. You discussed it in a way that was pretty diplomatic, and should not bring out the hottest of takes.
Academic ineligibility makes a heck of a lot more sense than āmom is pushing him to go overseas amidst an international pandemicā
Man if thatās true thatās absolutely brutal. I would be sad not to have him here but itās much worse thinking about a player like him not having a place to play.
Thatās the most unfortunate uninformed take that Iāve heard.
And by hot takes, I mean the UM doesnāt care enough about sports crowd, but that is normally the Arrrrggghhh why doesnāt admissions care we canāt be Ohio State in football crowd.
Which is why I appreciate this board a lot. This is MOSTLY a pretty level headed place, outside of a game thread or two. The 247/Rivals, MGoBlog forums are a mess when there is some not so great news.
We need some men of action in that regressive admissions department. Hold up the McGary sign when these pencil pushers are analyzing academic requirements. We need people in there who āget it.ā
Are there ways for one to become eligible such as online classes?
So likeā¦ is that just it then? Todd to Michigan is over?
Well, I think itās early to say how the COVID crisis changes eligibility requirements. My wife is a school (guidance) counselor and they are receiving new directives everyday. Weāre in NY, where passing regents exams are mandatory to receive a diploma. However, the state department of education just passed guidance that these exams are now cancelled and they are redetermining the requirements to graduate. How that looks for college entrance - who knows at this point. The bottom line is not even kids or parents would be sure if they qualified or not at this point. Too many moving parts. Not to dispute with DOTMAN who may have other insider information, but making any assumptions right now seems premature.
I did not mean to make an assumption that it was specifically because of COVID. There are a host of academic scenarios that could be taking place. I was highlighting a few of the possibilities but was not intending on being exhaustive. I was trying to add up pieces of data that we have an trying to spin it together.
I agree that there are too many moving parts to this to be sure of the situation, as you said. As Silverblue continues to preach, we are just trusting Howard in the process at this point. Nothing else that we can be doing, nor should we be undermining it at this point
All ACT/SAT stations have been cancelled. The school I work for had 3 seniors that were going to retake it and they canāt now. Two of them are still qualifiers but one of them needed to retake it to become one. So idk what is going to happen to him. Wonder if the NCAA will make some adjustments for one year. Probably not but they should because it leaves thousands of kids at all levels of all sports in weird spots. Isaiah Todd maybe included in that group.
Feels like thatās something theyāll have to adapt to. I mean all college admissions departments will be facing that challenege
If they donāt, expect some lawsuits. Thereās no way that students would not be allowed āopportunity.ā
Yeah, I didnāt mean to make it seem like I was only replying to you or coming at you. Like you said, it was all conjecture on your part and is a valid hypothesis at this time.
I have a feeling that things will work themselves out. Iām somewhat reassured by the interaction Todd had where he replied with the āLMAO.ā
FWIW theres already been talk the ncaa will waive act/sat entry requirements for this year
