2020 - F - Isaiah Todd (Commit)

Kids back out of their commitments all the time. Until he is on campus and enrolled, nothing is guaranteed.

For sure. But committed kids pretty much always will say they are going to said school they are committed to. If they don’t say that then they aren’t really committed

Side note: If anything, I’d imagine the pandemic increases his chances of staying home.

Yeah I think he did say that once. Although before that I had heard that his mom was against that option. So :man_shrugging:

Depends on what you mean by talented. Christopher is the better basketball player by a quite a large margin right now. Todd could be more talented given that he has better size, length, athleticism, and maybe even a better shot. He’s very raw, but he has what the NBA is looking for.

Nothing raw about his shot.

Working on Isaiah Todd’s 20 thoughts on 2020 for early this week. Same as before with Terrance Williams, any major questions you guys have?

Honest thoughts on the jumper

Definitely want honest thoughts on the jumper, I agree. Also, the current roster composition is hard to speculate on, but if Franz and Livers return, could some of Todd’s minutes come at the 5? If not then how might the minutes distributions work assuming Franz and Livers are the favorites to be the 3 and 4, respectively.

Physically, strength wise, can Todd be effective, stay out of foul trouble, playing D at the 5 in the BIG? I have my doubts. Is Todd a rim protector?

Offensively he looks like a more explosive version of Mo Wagner. Matchup nightmare for sure as small ball 5.

Well assuming Livers is gone I think you now assume that the 4 spot is a Todd/Johns battle? Another key question here obviously is going to be utility at the 5 spot, or, maybe those two can play together? I’d love to be able to go five-out again, but does Howard want to? Presumably though the flexibility will be there. You go big with Dickinson or Davis, or strech with Todd and/or Johns?

Oh god please no

No I did not mean at the same time, but I could have worded that better and edited to make clear. I mean that there are two big 5 on the roster now as well as two stretch 5s.

Isaiah Todd is often described as raw on this site. What does the team gain/lose if Todd gets extended minutes at the 4? What part of Todd’s game needs the most improvement for Michigan to be a top tier Big Ten team?

I can’t even begin to think of rotations until the roster is settled. There are at least a couple pieces of the possible rotation that won’t be returning to the team, or… won’t be joining the team.

Todd shoots, dribbles and passes with obvious skill. When I think of raw, I think of someone who is large and/or very athletic who lacks basic basketball skill.

Best former Michigan player comparison?
Best presumptive 1 and Done comparison (another HS senior in the past who was also thought of to be a 1 and Done, even if it didn’t pan out that way)?
Other than the jumper, what holes do you see in his game where he might need time to adjust to the college level?

Agree, but could we also do a wrong-answers-only version?

I think looking at his talent and upside and then comparing that to his production both in terms of volume and efficiency is where I see and understand people pegging him with the term “raw”. Especially this year. In most the games where they played quality competition, Todd was ok but not great. And they played a lot of good teams this year. To me he is like a forward version of Jordan Poole. He shows moments where you were like “this guy could be a high level pro one day.” But then he will either disappear or make poor decisions and it can be frustrating because of the talent they have. It should be easier than what it is.

What is his consistency like against top competition?

Does he disinterested against lower talent? Does he rise against the beat? Or vice versa

Do you think coaching takes some of the “he settles too much” conversation out of the equation? In other words, do you think he’s good enough to get the green light anywhere on the court, or will his production be more structured?
