It’s not really the “first sign” though. In fact there’s been zero indication or a “first sign” that it’s actually prevalent in recovered covid patients I think is the problem that most have with it. It’s a “concern” not backed by any clinical evidence or data.
Thanks Moe. This is what I’m talking about. If the medical experts take a position based on science and their own research, that is what I’ll be paying attention to. I think all of us absolutely want the best for our student athletes and everyone associated with our collegiate programs. Thanks for sharing this.
Notre Dame will start the season at No. 13 Michigan State Saturday, November 28…
Yep – ND and MSU joint hosting an MTE.
Ball State was set to come to Ann Arbor on Dec. 29, as previously reported by MLive. That game is still on, according to a Ball State basketball spokesperson, but will happen in early December.
And on Friday the Detroit News reported Michigan’s home game against Oakland, initially scheduled for Dec. 21, will take place on Nov. 29. A Michigan basketball staffer confirmed the date change.
Finally got around to updating this page too
Is it looking like Oakland will be the opener or should we expect a game on the 25th/26th?
Yikes. Let’s hope Oakland isn’t the scheduled opener and also that they get things in order in the next two+ weeks.
They’re starting back up in the next week or so.
Scheduling challenges ahead…
I was wondering when something like this would be put out there. And it seems to me like it makes sense.
I wonder if he’d be making all this noise if his team wasn’t one that is currently on pause? If you polled college basketball coaches and teams Pitino’s idea probably wouldn’t be very popular. Let them do they best they can to get these games in and keep the kids as safe as possible.
What criteria would you have for when to start? My guess is that you made them much stricter than where we are now there wouldn’t be a season.
Move the NCAA tournament back sure but delaying the start of the season is beyond dumb. Need as much time as possible to get in as many games as possible.
Pitino is purely self serving. As if he really cares. Delaying would just be delaying the inevitable. No new protocols or anything will be in by February. Non-con was probably always a dumb idea though
I don’t see how anyone could watch what’s happening in cfb and think its smart to delay and give even less time to get games in. This is not difficult, start with conference play right now, see how things go and possibly sneak non conference in at the end of the season.
This is where I said in another thread that the NCAA needs to earn their right to print money. Step up and do something and come up with some protocols that work. The reality we are seeing is that one person gets infected and knocks out a team via contact tracing. This is not going to be sustainable as numbers grow across the country.
My opinion is that we will be in a much better position come March. COVID will still be an issue, yes, but we SHOULD be coming out the backside and have a vaccine released or very close. If we started games March 1, did pretty much conference only and had May Madness that ends on Memorial Day I think we end up with a much more representative of a season than we are going to end up with by going full steam ahead at this point.
This is another option I think is a good idea. I’ve heard of conferences giving a week before Conference Tournaments to have for make-up games. I like that idea. If you don’t have to make up any games, then you throw some non-con in there.
Especially seeing the difference in protocols…some teams have to shut down for 2 weeks for one case/contact tracing where schools like MSU carry on with Izzo testing as positive. Start with conference only, work in non-con on the back end if make ups aren’t needed.
Schools aren’t going to let the NCAA dictate to them on a serious health issue. For the tournament, sure, but not for a whole season. There’s a wide disparity in resources across the NCAA. It would be very difficult for small schools to follow the protocols of the Big Ten and the Big Ten isn’t going to agree to do something they don’t think is safe for their players.
That idea is never going to fly. I don’t get how so many of us thing the NCAA has a lot of power. They have none when it comes to big issues. The member schools and conferences decide how to handle everything important to them. They let the NCAA take care of the details and organizing tournaments.
Sorry, but starting in March sounds like a terrible idea. The vaccine is expected to be available in April, but they say it will take months before everyone will have access to it. Maybe this country will be in a much better position in March, maybe not. I’m not sure there’s a strong reason to think it will be. Football is playing. hockey started today. Basketball will have some struggles, but if you start in March there would be little opportunity to make up missed games. Start early and that should be doable. If things are really bad, then the season could be extended and the tournament moved back.
When things looked bad for starting football in September a lot of people were saying it would be better now. It’s not.
