Late response here since a lot of this conversation was 4 days ago but:
Insinuating that Brooks/DDJ are the same mold of player is just wrong. DDJ is a PG, Brooks is a SG. On the season DDJ’s ast% is ~13.5, Brooks is ~11.5. but in conference games DDJ is at around 20% and Brooks is at around 10%.
When X isn’t on the floor DDJ is the one initiating the offense, not Brooks. Since B1G play has restarted, Brooks has 3 games with more than 2 assists (max of 4 assists), DDJ has 5 (max of 7).
DDJ is a PG and Brooks isn’t. I’m not trying to say DDJ needs to start next year. If we have Christopher I’m very much in the start Brooks camp since Christopher can initiate offense and Brooks is the best defender, a good shooter and good secondary ball handler. But DDJ is a clear improvement over Brooks as a ball handler and distributor.
I had a friend who was going into his 5th year at a SEC school and the HC told him if he walked on the final season he would groom him as a grad assistant and help him with his coaching future. It worked out for him. He got in-state tuition, some academic money, and another random scholarship that almost paid for everything.
Well, it was going to come up sooner or later. Presumably Davis will participate in Senior Night. Poor response from JH to respond like that. It’s part of the gig and he needs to prepare for questions like that.
If Christopher commits, and if there is no attrition, the number of potential scholarship players will be 15, two more than the allowable scholarship roster.
Question #1: If Austin Graduates and wishes to stay, can he be offered an academic scholarship, a TA or an RA to switch from a regular athletic scholarship to an academic one. Note that Austin Hatch was switched to a non-athletic scholarship (if my memory serves me). If that is possible, then the scholarship players can go to 13+1
Question #2: Since Juwan Howard is a University employee, his kids might be entitled to reduced tuition ffees. So, if Jace accepts a redshirt and his family can foot the reduced tuition, is it possible that the scholarship issue is solved without the need of any of the current players having to transfer?
Of course this might be a moot point, and the way it looks we will see at least one player transferring.
Austin either needs to grad transfer or keep an athletic scholarship. Austin Hatch was given a medical hardship scholarship, so he was no longer allowed to play on the basketball team.
If I remember correctly, Juwan hasn’t been here long enough to qualify for reduced tuition as a university employee I think. Either way, he can afford in state tuition pretty easily.
Thanks for the clarifications. Austin can actually graduate and be accepted at the UM Rackham Graduate school. If he is given an academic scholarship (I hear that he is an A student), he can walk on the team if he wishes, no?
I am not sure Jace is entitled in-state tuition since he is attending a school in Florida, but his dad is a resident for a year, so he might be. At any event, I am sure his dad can afford out of state tuition for him.
There is a large gray area on how to handle this, and I am sure Juwan has all the answers at hand for now. I think he will wait to see what the situation is, and he will act accordingly, even if there are no transfers. Under this scenario, it would be scary to face Michigan next year, as the team will be loaded and the practices will be extremely competitive.
I don’t know but can’t imagine Davis can be given an academic scholarship, even in grad school, to get aroud the scholarship limit. If so, we’d be seeing it elsewhere. Too subject to abuse…
Possible… His GPA in high school was 4.1. His profile at UM reads:
• Academic All-Big Ten (2018, ‘19)
• Michigan Academic Achievement (2018, ‘19)
• U-M’s Jordan Morgan/Bodnar Brothers Award for Academic Achievement (2019)
With that, I am sure he will not have a problem being accepted in a graduate program at UM. If he cannot get an academic scholarship, he can go about the same way most of us UM graduates have gone (RA’s or TA’s).
As to your second point, the length of employment is an NCAA rule. Michigan doesn’t offer reduced tuition to the relatives of employees so it’s a moot point in Ann Arbor.
