2019 - Wing - Jalen Wilson (De-Commit)

Would be very pleased with either one, over the moon to have both.

I assume that Wagner will need no adjustment to the new 3pt line

Wilson was penciled in as the starting 3 IMO until JB left. That said, I would take Franz. I think he will stick around longer than Wilson as Moe will make sure he knows the beauty of the college experience vs the pro experience.

I’m just waiting on our “On Franz Wagner” new thread from Dylan. Waiting for that little piece of UMHoops intell.

Tough to string two tin cans together across the Atlantic Ocean.:joy:

when is Howard suspected to visit with Jalen?

Massive difference in football and basketball recruiting. Football, you’re filling 15-30 spots in a recruiting class and so are other schools. Alot more recruits across the country means alot more potential flips. JH was also hired with a month to go before signing day back when there was only one signing day. Howard was hired a month after the spring signing day. Because most kids have their LOI in, there’s far fewer potential recruits. If he was hired at the beginning of April, I’m sure we wouldn’t be at risk of having as many open scholarships as we do. But Howard was hired after most recruits were signed and most grad transfers had decided. Far far fewer options than most any new coach would have to work with.

I’m sure Wilson knew Self and Williams or someone on their staff to an extent. Doesn’t mean they were a top candidate before, but I’m sure those schools had bigger priorities. And he still has years and years of their experience and stability to fall back on. If Wilson re-commits, I’ll be very very impressed. If not, I’m not going to hold it against Howard. Not much he could do.

Well, not wanting to go round and round on this, so last time for me on this specific element of it, but a not-exact comparison can still be a useful comparison, and I’m on record here saying I’d be a merely a little bit skeptical if he didn’t land one of the two of Wilson or Wagner. Also said I would not make the recruiting of any one player into a litmus test, so I’m with you fully on not holding it against Howard if Wilson isn’t here in the fall. I’d just feel better at this point about the qualitative projection that he’s gonna be a great recruiter if he managed to salvage at least one player from the group.

As for who Wilson knows on the KU or UNC staffs, the link posted above makes it clear he was comfortable with the primary assistant at KU, but that his recruitment there before he’d committed to Michigan never progressed to the point where he’d talked enough to Self to know how he would be used there. Same for UNC. Of his three primary options, he’s getting to know all these head coaches just now.

Agreed
(I need to add another line to meet the 10 character minimum post length :joy: )

Wilson and Wagner aren’t going to make me skeptical at all. He’s had very very limited time to get to know them and he’s not going to be able to do an official visit with either.

Yeah, he knows an assistant well from all three schools and doesn’t know the head coaches all that well. But as I have said time and again, two of those coaches have insanely long track records. One of the coaches has absolutely no track record as a HC. Which puts him at a massive disadvantage when there’s limited time to build a relationship.

The 2020 class if going to be a big evaluative tool for Howard and his staff’s recruiting ability. 2019 is pretty irrelevant given the timing and circumstances.

If Juwan can pull a rabbit out of his hat for 2019, it would say a lot to me but, to your point, if he doesn’t then it really isn’t a knock on him

How high are we setting the bar for Juwan for 2020?

Does he really have to do better in his first full recruiting cycle (where most of these kids have relationships with coaches and bag men already) than JB ever did?

say we close with no more 2019 recruits…if we have a so so year (barely make/dont make tourney) and we dont get a top 15ish recruiting class with potentially 6 open roster spots then that next year could be another no tourney year and the narrative is the lights are too bright

a 5 star, two-three 4 stars, and one-two three stars would be ideal
He is behind, but there is already Zeb, and Jace likely be in if offered, Jabri probably is still a Michigan lean. Given Juwan’s track record as a player and as a coach, getting one or two 4 star bigs in the class should be within his reach. The question is if he can pull in a 5 star (top 20) in the class.

my projection is 3 4 stars + 2 three stars that fills in the need. But I expect Juwan to beat it.

I’d really love to find a grad transfer next year that fits, and balance out class sizes. Wish there would have been time to get in on the Hausers.

I’m not asking for a new Fab Five or something like that. But Michigan has alot of spots open in the 2020 class. We have alot of unknowns with playing time and will be graduating our starting C and PG. These issues won’t be settled by the first signing day. We are also a very well known program with national appeal (not saying we’re a Kentucky or Duke or anything like that). We also have a great start to the class with Zeb Jackson - who I think is a bit underrated and will end up an all conference caliber player as an upperclassmen.

Personally, I think we’re a pretty attractive landing spot for recruits. Coaches usually get a bit of recruiting momentum as a new hire for their first full class. I would be disappointed if we didn’t have 3 top 100sh players in the 2020 class. We have one already. Two more is not unrealistic given what we have to offer. Wont’ be the end of the world if we don’t, but I would be lying if I wouldn’t have some consternation about the future if we don’t have a very good class.

I think we’ll have a strong class. Not worried.

Also, I think there’s a solid chance Zeb Jackson never makes it to upperclassman status.

The fact that he’s seemingly fairly confident in what he wants to do is not a good sign

Even if it’s a long shot to actually re-sign him, I’ll be really disappointed if Juwan can’t execute an in-home visit before Wilson commits.
