He certainly isn’t good. He has THE worst contract in the NBA right now, and that includes John Wall’s busted Achilles.
17ppg ain’t bad
Wiggins is arguably the single most destructive (to his own team) force in the NBA.
Wiggins stinks, but that’s not Self’s fault.
It is if he takes 17 shots, doesn’t play defense, and doesn’t make shots for his teammates.
Cliff Alexander had a ton of headwinds outside of Bill Self’s quality or lack thereof, including his size, his skill-set, and his character.
Josh Jackson was good at Kansas!
So if we could choose between Wilson and Wagner, who might we go with? Wilson is likely the more polished product, but Wagner looks increasingly polished himself. Wilson can maybe play the four, too, but Wagner MIGHT contribute more greatly to a certain kind of offensive flow, backdoor cuts, etc. (would Wilson want/need the ball more?)
I would prefer Wagner. I think his game is more diverse, he’s the better player now and has the higher upside. I don’t think we can go wrong either way though.
I’m a Timberwolves fan. He’s not good.
Whichever one wants to commit first. Haha.
Between the two, I agree, Wilson seems more primed to contribute early…so give me the immediate impact and I’ll trust the future to fill in. Projecting down the line, if Coach Howard recruits a Top20 Class of 2020 to complement projected roster returnees, then pipeline is re-filled.
I’m surprised, given the massive difference in quality of current opposition, that people seem to unanimously feel Wilson is more ready than Wagner. Wagner is getting 10+ minutes a game in the highest level of basketball outside the NBA.
I have no opinion on who the better long term prospect is, but if we are discussing short-term impact, put my money on the guy for whom the size, speed, and strength of the college game will be like a vacation from his current level.
I remember hearing stuff about him simply not liking basketball that much. He does it because it gets him money and he happens to be absurdly talented. It explains the complete lack of improvement since he’s been in the league.
Wilson, IMO, is more projectionable at the college level. It’s not a knock on Wagner. Often European “normal age” players take a little time to adjust to US culture, language, style of play, schooling. Fewer of those changes for Wilson to adjust.
and shooting his threes from the new, further back distance …
Sam Webb sees a hell of a lot more high school players than most of us and he was very convinced that Wagner was the most likely (by a good chunk) to be a day one contributor.
Interesting. Hadn’t heard or read that before. I trust Sam’s opinion a lot in that regard.
Wagner for me. Plays now against men. Just a guess at this one but small advantage because he’s used to the new 3 line too. Others will surely adjust but he won’t have to.
I think the main reasoning was that people don’t really realize just how much higher Franz’s competition level is. I totally get what you’re saying with the US adjustments, but I think the competition factor will play a bigger role than cultural stuff.
Franz is an easy pick, more upside, more positional need, as he can play 2.
But, to be honest. I’d be very happy with either. Kind of splitting hairs, in my opinion. Add either one and the 2019-20 depth chart improves significantly.
