2019 - Wing - Jalen Wilson (De-Commit)

agree, but williams and self, for all the high level recruits they’ve had, have never impressed me that much as developers. granted mediocre development > unknown, youre playing as much for the stage and brand as you are development.

can argue two guys coaching in nba can pitch development. Bam and whiteside in MIA, Eisley with chris paul, bledsoe, bradley beal, john wall, hardaway and burke (assuming eisley worked with guards at all stops)

Bill Self and Roy Williams have plenty of development to point to if they want. They’re among the most successful coaches in the country. Was every player they got a finished product?

Both Williams and Self have more current players in the NBA than this that they can say they actually sent there rather than just received as an NBA coach.

I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t commit to a coach whose system is a complete and total question mark. I personally wouldn’t commit to Michigan as a prospect right now given that nothing is known about how anything will be done. Wilson’s known Juwan Howard for what, one week?

they also start on third base and can recruit differently

average developers at great programs

2018 starting day roster by school in nba
12 - unc
12 - kansas
8 - michigan

You do realize John Beilein isn’t the coach of the program anymore, right?

ill buy the second arguement, all im saying is my opinion is im not that impressed with UNC and kansas development

since 2012
unc - six 5 stars, twelve 4 stars
kansas - eleven 5 stars, thirteen 4 stars

Just because they have gotten their program to the point they can recruit great players, doesn’t mean they can’t develop. Frank Mason went from 3 star to POY. Devonte Graham was 98 to AA. Svi Mykcuwhatever was 200+ to being drafted. That’s all recent.

For Roy, Coby White was 25th and now in 1 year he is top 10 for sure. If you knock them for getting elite players, you have to credit them for making those elite players move up. Luke Maye became an AA.

But compared to Juwan Howard whose track record is ??? I don’t know how Roy and Self’s development can be put down. They’re at least sure things.

and then there’s josh jackson who has been a complete flop

im not saying they’re BAD, but start with that floor of talent and their job isnt as hard. if you think no development goes on in the NBA i can’t help you. penny hardaway will be the real test of jimmy joes vs x/o’s this year

im allowed to think given the talent level advantage they have, they don’t do as well as one would expect from an elite coach

that said, yes i wouldnt trust howard over them if i met him a week ago

Beilein’s certainly had some flops relative to draft position.

Josh Jackson was the 4th pick in the draft. If you want to penalize people for making bad NBA players, then JB really doesn’t come out well.

The whole thing with them getting so much talent is that the players are gone half the time before they’ve even gotten a chance to truly develop them. I don’t think that’s something that can be used against top tier programs.

for perspective, relatively similar programs, with players in nba

duke 30
kentucky 25
ucla 17

Duke and Kentucky are not equivalent in a comparison with UNC and Kansas. You said the latter two have gotten 17 five stars since 2012. How many have Duke and Kentucky gotten?

Duke has gotten 21, Kentucky has gotten 31. I would say UNC and Kansas grade out relatively the same proportion-wise.

I don’t think Juwan and the staff should be touting talent development as a reason to choose Michigan over UNC or Kansas at this point, but immediate playing time seems to be something Jalen outwardly wants that Michigan could obviously offer more of than UNC, and Kansas is debatable.

In Roy Williams’ entire career at UNC, Tyler Hansbrough is the only freshman to ever play 30 minutes a game or more. He’s had numerous recruits rated higher than Wilson out of high school that were barely part of the rotation as a freshman.

Kansas returns Dotson, Garrett, Agbaji, and Moore in the backcourt, Azubuike, Lightfoot and McCormick in the front court (55% of total team minutes last year, and this would have been more if Azubuike didn’t get hurt) with Silvio De Sousa now eligible as well. They also have two SF commits already in Wilson’s class.

He’s stepping into 25 minutes minimum at Michigan from day one with a legitimate chance to lead the team in scoring IMO. That’s not happening at either alternative.

yes probably best arguement is playing time makes players better.

That can also be a tricky selling point, because if you imply that you have more playing time available, he could take it as a slight that you think he can’t get PT at the other places. And from what I have seen, Jalen is supremely confident.

Saw 22 new replies…assumed he made a decision. Nope.

Maybe frame it more as “shots” than PT. We dont have the proven shooters on our roster. X and Teske are not going to be taking shots away from Wilson
