2019 - Wing - Franz Wagner (Commit)

An ultimatum? He’s going to see every other serious target in the span of 2-3 weeks. Why not see Wagner too? It seems like a natural part of recruiting.

the timing for me is ideal, i believe Mo said he would be home for a couple weeks at end of NBA season. the investment in a flight i also think is a sign both sides are serious about the potential and getting on same page, less ultmatum than statement of intention

I don’t follow this logic at all. He’s flying halfway around the world to check in on Franz. That’s a statement of interest not pressure.

He hasn’t even seen Bones play in person and is choosing to go check in on Franz.

What am I missing?

Also, it’s a good idea to fend off other coaches. I’m sure there are plenty that would like to sign Franz. A good meeting might just help him so no to scheduling visits to new schools.

The belief that college coaches routinely issue ultimatums (to recruits and rostered players) and the insistence they should is one of the most wildly wrong and impossible to kill notions out there.

What is not done: “If you don’t commit now, I’m giving your offer to someone else.”

What IS done: “If you choose to wait, I can’t guarantee we will have a spot for you when you make your decision.”

IMO, it’s more

  1. One spot for Wagner or Pierce
  2. One spot for Quinones or Bones

It would make sense to me that JB would tell Franz that he can’t guarantee him a spot if he waits another month to make decision. I would imagine Pierce decides in the next 2.5 weeks or so.

not an insider, but the takeaway i’ve heard from webb/others is its between michigan and alba (pro ball)… that if he comes to US, it will be UM

What if two players in one bucket grade out more favorably than two in the other bucket? Would you take two from one or the other?

Hard to imagine him turning not taking both if it’s an option. He’s just said he’s looking for the readiest players, and amongst the group of players not on the roster this year but on it next year or potentially on it, they are two of the most ready, according to the coverage.

It seems like both are forwards, but, Dylan, do you think they could see time at the 2? Both project to be able to be 3&D, but maybe you lack a secondary ballhandler?

The strong opinion out there is that Franz either comes to Michigan or plays professionally in Germany. I don’t think any other schools are a serious option for him.

I’ve heard that too, but it would be unwise for Beilein to make the same assumption. Maybe a face to face meeting reinforces that idea. It’s got to be better to assume that other coaches will come after your targets and some of them can be very persuasive. If you can keep them from getting their foot in the door, you do it.

That’s what I said. Get a feel for wags before offering bones

I’m agreeing with you. Gauging wags before offering bones

Same difference. That’s what I meant

I’d be willing to take Bones and Quinones. Basically, you are trying to find someone to prevent Eli from being a starter, and someone to prevent Brandon from being a starter. You could theoretically play Bones and Quinones together at the 2-3 next to Livers, so I’d be okay with that outcome.

Wagner and Pierce together just seems like it’d be poor roster management.

If Johns is so lost that a kid nicknamed Bones will come in and take all his playing time then that would be incredibly disappointing.

Johns is a 4, Hyland is a 2?

Right, but Reegs mentioned the idea of Hyland and Quinones starting, thus pushing Livers to the 4.

I also would much prefer Livers to be a 4 if possible, but with how the roster is shaping up next year, we won’t really have anyone who is shaped like a 3.

I guess I’m surprised that people would prefer Bones to Franz.
