2019 - G - Nah'Shon Hyland (VCU Commit)

Can we go back and promise DJ Carton 40 minutes at the 2, a national player of the year as a freshman, a national title and a top 3 pick in the upcoming draft? Heard he likes that kind of thing - might be enough to swing him

FWIW, CBS had us at #2 under the assumption that we’d only lose Matthews, dropped us to 5 when they expected us to lose Iggy, and now down to 15 when with the announcement Poole was staying in the draft. They have Memphis at 5, under the assumption they add Achiuwa, Hampton, and Quinones. We’ll see if Penny can coach. They also have Maryland at 6. They have the talent, but Turgeon is Turgeon.

Forgot to add link to latest update:

This upcoming season was unique in terms of preseason expectations in the Beilein era. Not since the Fab Five’s sophomore year were we going to come in ranked this high. That’s where my added consternation comes from.

Agreed. Sucks what’s occurring but The lack of faith on the 2018 class is interesting. Johns and castleton are going to be real nice pieces imo. This year. I’m also convinced eli will be at worse serviceable. We will be good but pierce or Franz would give us some cushion.

Based on what? We’re still #5 in those ESPN rankings after losing Poole and Mathews…why wouldn’t we think it’s possible?

I’ve been assuming iggy has been gone, also the floor spacing problem isn’t magically getting fixed next year (if X/teske playing 35 min/game) and Im guessing teske and X remain in the ~30% range as three point shooters while slightly increasing efficiency.

In parallel with that, I’m looking at the roster that we have guaranteed thus far. I’m just not that panicked (perhaps ignorance is bliss). I think there should be better cohesion, a few surprises, and a good season ahead with the players we have. It’s not ideal that we’re whiffing on some players to help out, but as is, I’ll be looking as forward to this season as any under Beilein.

I’d be willing to bet teske shoots north of 35. Even if you don’t love our squad you gotta compare to what’s out there. None of these teams are world beaters either.

I really think you will see improvement from numerous spots. Johns has potential to really step up and give us a fourth offensive option. I also believe eli will shoot significantly better.

I’m not happy we’re striking out even with no improvement from anyone we’d be a top 20 team or better. Have faith my friend. The raw talent is there with guys coupled with one of the best developers of talent in the game.

I think ā€œKeeping up with the Jonesā€ (I.e MSU) is the bigger measure

Good thing the Joneses didn’t throw in the towel on the season and say that it wasn’t worth chasing because they lost Bridges and Jackson and had to start a former walk-on and wouldn’t be National Championship contenders last year

Hey guys I’m a bit behind, it’s been a busy day in the forum but is Hyland no longer an option? I saw someone say that in another thread.

The rundown:

Sam Webb made an implication on his radio show this morning that there may be academic issues holding Hyland up due to the time off after jumping out the window. He based this on the fact that their camp was looking at a year of prep school despite having suitors like Michigan and Kansas after him.

Then someone noticed that Yaklich unfollowed him on twitter and people thought it was confirmed that he wasn’t an option. Someone then proceeded to notice that Hyland simply deleted his account to ā€œblock out noiseā€ or something. I cannot confirm either of those two things.

And that’s where we stand. He may or may not be a 2019 option :man_shrugging:

Still had a twitter account

35 or higher from deep? I’ll put a good natured 20 on it.

I’d add if he misses I think he’ll be in the 33-34 range.

Kinda hard for me to be confident either way with a guy that has Teske’s sample size where 3 more misses or makes is the difference between being a 34% or 26% shooter.

Yea, just viewing that. I don’t see a broken shot. Arc he needs, but I like most of the mechanics. I think he’ll go anywhere from 32.5-37ish. I also expect that to be a major focus for him this summer. Although gathering himself and finishing easy looks maybe more important. Not sure if thats something he can work on though per say

I know people will say Michigan has the same academic standards as other schools when admitting athletes, but we know that isn’t true.

The thing is if we dropped Hyland, we probably don’t recruit him as a 2020 recruit?

Couldn’t we accept his commitment as a 2020, have him prep, and then go from there?

If he reemerges later, probably a lot more schools interested.

I’d heard rumors that Michigan asked him to go to a prep school. Don’t have any idea if they’re true or just speculation. Certainly they could take his commitment for 2020. Football did that with Brad Hawkins. It’s not binding. He can’t sign an LOI for 2020 yet.
