I agree with you in that I’d like to see a second true pg on the roster after Walton graduates. We are kind of hamstrung in terms of roster space unless we have some attrition, though.
Seems like the idea class breakdown for 2017 would be Poole, a combo forward and a PG. Essentially Poole plus Walton and Irvin’s replacements.
Right now that could look something like Jarrod West, Jordan Poole, Kyle Young. Think that would be an overall pretty solid group.
How would we feel about Simpson, West, Poole, Watson, Young, Davis and Teske as a two-year group?
thankyou! i think thats a top tier team to be competitive in the big ten
That scholarship is simply too valuable too expend on a 5-8 minute player…we need a roster overhaul from a talent standpoint. Can’t waste scholarships on role players IMO. This is where previous recruiting misses and roster mismanagement are killing us…don’t think anyone can deny that JB and co completely mismanaged the 5 spot…used a bunch of scholarships for project types and now we have limited room for necessary roster improvements
All boils down to this for me moving forward - we have what appears to be a good role payer/starting B10 type at minimum in X, we have what appears to be an upper tier B10 SG in Poole, we have a plenty of options at the 5 in Donnal (best option with potentially 2 more years), Wagner (clearly most offensive upside), Teske (shotblocker), Davis (project that may be able to score with back to the basket)…and we are stuck with backup quality players at the 3/4 in Robinson, Dawkins, Kam…those spots are the clear sore spots on the roster.
We need to solidify those spots from a talent standpoint, whereas I think you are looking at it from a depth perspective. As we’ve seen the past few years, depth is a moot point if said depth is lacking talent.
Dylan that is an EXTREMELY slow group that has athletic limitations…need a dynamic playmaker in there as opposed to West.
If it’s me, Im taking Young AND Cain
Man it’s the biggest elephant in the room some of us on this board know it some are blind to it but it’s true.
Let’s not start this into another argument about recruiting Detroit. Issue to think about is that Cain and Young would probably play similar positions, if Michigan is only planning on taking one of those two I think most people agree that Young is the better prospect of those two. Something to balance or consider at this point.
Not really, Cain is a natural 3 and Young a natural 4. Also disagree that most think Young is a better prospect…just different type of game. Do think Young has a higher floor but Cain has the higher ceiling
I’m with you. West looks solid but unless that pg is an elite stud id rather roll with young( I like how we all are acting like he’s coming, fingers crossed) and Cain or whoever else they can get who’s a greAt athlete on the wing. I think we can get by with Simpson and rahkman handling the rock
Before we entertain the concept of a third player in the 2017 class…is JB willing to cut a 2nd player in order to open that spot?
Reegs I think he is willing to move kids on. He has done it before. I actually have always admired how he did that.
Jamal Cain visited MSU yesterday for the game vs. PSU…hope Izzo doesn’t decide to seriously pursue. Anyone know the MSU scholarship situation for 17?
Don’t know their scholarship situation but man, their offer list for 2017 (per VC) is scary to look at, especially after their 2016 haul. It seems that Michigan’s just not seriously looking at the same caliber of player.
It’s called talent WB.
Lima Senior and X play Toledo Whitmer at University of Toledo on Thursday night. I’m in graduate school at UT and have night class that night. Luckily I have an exam, so I should get out of my class early. Wish they were the 8pm game that night. X’s team should win and will most likely have a third matchup with Toledo St. John’s Jesuit on Saturday. Both games have been close, and Ed Heintschel has pulled off upsets in the state tournament before. Hoping to make it to all the games for this district.
Xavier looks like the real deal. Wish I lived closer to be able to go watch him. Hopefully he can bring some consistency to this program for the next few years.
MSU’s scholarship chart
So, worst case, they will have 3 spots for the 2017 class. They will likely have 4+ with a Davis early entry and any 2016 early entries. Assuming a Davis early entry, their depth chart will be
PG - Winston - Nairn
SG - Langford - McQuaid - Ahrens
SF - Bridges - Bess
PF - Clark
C - Ward
So they’re going to take a bunch of bigs/forwards in 2017
There is still the possibility that State adds Jackson to the 16’ class. Horrible for Michigan and would also alter State’s scholarship chart… just seems like an inevitability considering Michigan’s luck this year
I think most of us are in agreement that Beilein needs to go back to 50-150 type players rather than swinging and missing on guys like Battle, Brown, Booker, Thornton, etc.
Maybe splitting hairs, but the names you mentioned were all top 25 (at one point). I think we have too much of the roster given to guys like ibi/davis types, and the sweet spot is probably 25-75. Guys we have gotten in that range since 2012: Irvin/Walton/Chatman/X. four years and four guys (and chatman’s rating was highly questioned). That rate needs to be higher, and JB has the program and facilities and track record (and shoes) to make that happen.
I think the pendulum swung too far the other way after the NBA entries and losses on the names you mentioned. He hated wasting his time on the top 25 guys (fair), but instead of putting that time in on guys in the 25-75 range, he went straight for the easiest segment with not enough upside to ever hang a banner. There is a middle ground here, and time to spend with them to win them over if they target them well. The 17 class could be the right time to bring this back to standard. Poole/Young/??? would be great.
