2017-18 Bracketology

Technically only the top 3 seeds are protected, and only in their first round games (it’s dumb)

Maryland’s win at Northwestern should help Michigan because it should help them stay Q1. Northwestern with another blown lead.

The worry could be Northwestern continuing to slide and falling out of the top 135. Potential Q3 loss for a potential Q1 gain.

Need them to beat Wisconsin at home Thursday.

Yep, N’W loss isn’t going to get better so should hope the Maryland win (potentially wins) stays decent.

What’s Michigan best case (win out) and worst case (lose out) range? Feels like we could go anywhere from a 3 or 4 to a 9 or 10 seed.

Michigan now up to the 6 line on bracketMatrix, and that’s with one bracket inexplicably leaving them off entirely. I assume the guy just forgot about Michigan cause we’re not in his last 8 out either.

Most of the time that happens they list Michigan State twice and it’s an autofill issue.

I’m going to be very upset if any of Kentucky, Missouri, and Alabama get a better seed than Michigan. Eye test they’re inferior to Michigan, advanced metrics they’re inferior to Michigan, and their resumes are no better except for RPI

If we won out with wins over penn st Michigan st Nebraska and Purdue were a 2 seed a day. Talks of a number 1.

As we get closer and closer to March, are there any bubble teams or potential 1st round matchups that play a consistent zone defense? This is my biggest fear in the tourney…getting paired against a capable team who plays zone and takes us out of what we do best.

If we were to get hot and win out and win the tourney with wins over state and say Purdue along the way there’s no way we can get seeded below a 2 imo , that would be criminal to have anything less. 9 straight wins, big ten champs, two wins over state one over Purdue plus Ohio st, Texas, ucla, penn st, Nebraska and Maryland twice? Coupled with no bad losses and many last second losses versus too teams and I don’t see how they could be a 3. Not that the polls matter but I bet we’d shoot up to the top 8 at least.

I’ve been studying up on the sec abd big 12 after all this hype and it’s just that, hype. By the eye test these sec teams that are getting lots of love, mainly auburn and tennesee would not beat us in a series. Maybe in a one offer if we had a bad day but there is no doubt in my mind we’re superior if both teams play their best. I’m not sure how they were all so successful in non conference play but these teams are not very impressive and I think just got some lucky wins early. I’d love to be a three seed in a draw with auburn as the two. Or as a six seed with tennesee as a 3. I prefer the vols to auburn for what it’s worth in talent. Auburn just lost a key 3 and d guy in mclemore to, he was one of their only guys that impressed me much. Either way if we do get shafted in seeding I’m praying we get paired with some of these sec / big 12 teams ( outside of Kansas or maybe west va) wouldn’t mind Texas tech either but I need to watch more before I fully judge them. Let’s hope for a fair seed or a nice draw at least.

Ok, I’ll say it. That picture! The look JP is giving Dak just is great. Excellent work UMHoops.

I think Auburn is solid and is the exact team that would give us trouble. 5 athletes all on the floor, would be able to switch every screen and can get downhill in a hurry on offense.

I made a bet before the season that Missouri would make that tournament, so I’ve been following that team extensively. Auburn is the only team that really took it to them.

Haha. Jordan Poole’s confidence and ability to communicate his confidence to his opponent must be worth at least a couple of points per game even in those games where he misses all of his shots.

Poole is going to be an absolute monster.

Moe would destroy their “bigs”

I’d be happy if Auburn was the 2 in UM’s bracket. It worked out pretty well last time Michigan faced a Bruce Pearl team under investigation. Auburn seems to have a lot of Q1 and Q2 wins of the less impressive variety. And they seem to rely on getting TOs and out in transition, which UM would have a good chance of negating. Plus they don’t have a guy to just post up Wagner all game. It’s not like they’re a bad team, but of the teams that seem to be likely 2-seeds, they seem like a good one to face.

I suspect that Poole’s long term success at Michigan will depend in great part on what transpires between his ears. Hopefully, a lot of that will come naturally with age and maturity. He certainly hs the skill set.

I’m concerned by the JB quote about him getting in the gym on his own. I think he has stauskas like ability and swag, but his work ethic needs to match those.

“We talked last week and I suggested that he work a little bit harder on his own time or in extra time in practice, of just getting good, solid reps up. And just trying to just get enough reps in so he felt more comfortable in games.”

Maybe he just meant to use his solo practice time not shooting from mid-court.
