Do we know if Michigan is looking a Huerter more for the 2016 or 2017 class?
Per Balas he believes UM wants him for 2017 but all of the other reports say he’s going 2016 and that’s where he is setting up visits to.
@Balas_Wolverine: Per @AdamZagoria, Kevin Huerter has set his U-M official. We believe U-M wants him in 2017: https://t.co/UUtiILBy7i
@AdamZagoria: I’m told that if Syracuse had a 2016 ship to offer they would’ve made Huerter’s list, but they don’t and he’s going 2016.
Huerter has way too many good offers to go 2017… If Michigan wants him 2017 and not 2016 then they won’t get him
So obviously Cassius Winston is priority 1 for 2016 recruiting. And we have Watson at 2G. I think the obvious move is to go hard after Bridges, looking for an immediate starter/heavy contributor to replace LeVert. I think the only other guy on the board that might - it’s a big step down, IMO - fill that role is Amir Coffey. Is he still on the board? What’s the status with him? Winston might start immediately, but I think that’s another big step down in likelihood - it’d mean he’s so good that we would be playing small in the backcourt rather than using more of our options at 3/4. With Bridges, I think you’re looking at a 2016-17 starting lineup of 1 Walton, 2 Irvin, 3 Bridges, 4 (best of Robinson/Dawkins/Chatman/Wagner, 5 Doyle. Coffey may or may not be able to beat out 3 of Robinson/Dawkins/Chatman/Wagner like Bridges would. Where does that leave Huerter? It’s hard to bring him in for an official visit without offering a scholarship. If he takes it, that puts us at 14 scholarships for 2016-17, but I’d imagine we’d still want Winston and Bridges (of the 2016 guys, Bridges is the most unlike any player on the roster or committed recruit). You immediately call Austin Davis and take him up on his offer to prep a year. You can then accept a commitment from Winston, but that puts you at 14 again with Bridges still on the board, though I guess most believe we’re playing a lot of catch up in this recruitment (but I wouldn’t be surprised if we caught up). And you have to still hope for attrition. Perhaps their angle with Huerter will be to offer a scholarship, but urge him to take his time deciding and basically say they can’t accept a commitment until they know what Winston is doing, which at this point, everyone knows that’s what we’re doing and I don’t think anyone would be offended - it’s how they would want to be treated if they were in Winston’s shoes. Sorry for the rambling…just trying to figure out the puzzle in my head. I guess a lot will be cleared up in the next 3 months.
Holy wall of text Batman. I like Coffey and I hope he’s still on the radar in addition to Bridges as a target. I’m most interested in what the avenue is to getting two more people in the class beyond Austin Davis reclassifying.

If Winston is, in your words, “so good that we would be playing small in the backcourt,” why would that be a big step down? It’s not as if we wouldn’t have options, Winston or no Winston–if he’s good enough to start immediately over all of those options, that wouldn’t be a bad thing, as witnessed by the fact that the last three NCAA Champs started backcourts where neither starter was bigger than 6’2".
Sorry meant a big step down in probability of a freshman starter. If we don’t get bridges or Coffey, I think Winston would be the most probable freshman starter, though still improbable.

I don’t know how improbable it would be. There is a lot of chatter recently about Winston to UM–I have to think that some of that is based on us selling him that he has a great chance to get playing time, if not as a starter, at very least as a frequently playing sub, as a freshman alongside Walton, something MSU is less able to sell with Langford coming aboard at the 2 and a junior Nairn and possibly a senior Eron Harris at the 1. Bacari’s tweet a few weeks ago showing Walton and Spike on the court together and noting that Beilein will play two PGs together seems geared to that.
I don’t doubt that he’ll get a ton of PT as a freshman with Spike and LeVert leaving plus I don’t expect Ibi to get a ton.
Very disappointed that Huerter committed to Maryland without visiting us, I really liked that kid. To think Turgeon was almost fired before last year and now he’s recruiting like Calipari.

Coincident with Under Armour deciding they want to be serious players in the bball shoe game. hmmm…

There will definitely be attrition after this year. We wouldn’t have been recruiting him with an OV scheduled without having an idea of a “potential” opening of a spot. He had made it clear he wasn’t reclassifying.
Useful/interesting tidbit from this morning on WTKA. Sam confirmed that Coffey is still A Target (said there were plural targets) left on the wing 2016 board. And the interesting thing about Coffey is that he is apparently going to be a late signing period guy, so that will give the roster a chance to shake out some more and the staff a chance to be selective.

I should add that the comment at the end there about “giving the roster a chance to shake out” is entirely my own commentary, not something he said directly.
Re: Coffey and the 2016 roster, the three years prior to last year the team lost at least two players to the NBA or transfer, and last year probably would’ve been Caris’s last except for the injury (so along with Bielfeldt not getting a 5th, would’ve made two). It makes sense for the staff to plan as if they’ll have one more spot (after Austin Davis), particularly for spring signees. They don’t have to put out any offers or take commitments in the meantime. It doesn’t mean they right now expect any particular player to transfer. But there will be some a time crunch this year.
If we are still pursuing a wing for 16, and aren’t able to land one of Coffey or Bridges ( let’s be honest it is highly unlikely we land either), really hoping the staff shows some interest in Devon Daniels. I think Ibi Watson has some potential as an upperclassmen, but his game is not college ready at this point, and he will definitely need some development. I think Daniels has a college ready body and athletic ability right now, and he’s got an above average handle and passing ability for a 6’5 wing. What most people don’t realize is that Daniels shoots it better from deep, at least in terms of percentage. New film on Daniels below
Film of Daniels is impressive. The question is if he will be a late signee. I think that we are done for this fall

I think there may be a chance that he does sign late based on his offers. When I first brought Daniels to the board he was essentially an unranked nobody. Fast forward 5 months later, it’s obvious he’s starting to get looks because he can play, but his offers are from UTEP, Utah, Depaul, and Kansas State (just offered today)…I think UM can snag him from one of those schools, but it’s only a matter of time before a plethora of high majors start showing interest as he will most likely be one if the best available wings after the early signing period assuming he doesn’t commit prior.
