It’s kind of inconsistent to say it feels like we’re comparing junior Langford to sophmore Battle, and then proceed to post footage of sophmore Battle in support of the same.
In any event, I think Tyus has a plus handle for a wing…in other words he has an above average handle in my view. I just don’t think his handle/playmaking ability is on par with Langford. I don’t mean that in a negative manner, in fact, if you read above, I explicitly say Battle is much more than ‘a shooter’. Tyus has the ability to get to the rack because of the plus handle and quick first step. Tyus is a good athlete as well.
Overall, I think Tyus is a very good player, no doubt an upper tier, multifaceted guy…just think Langford is a tad better.
I just posted the videos bc I wasn’t sure if anyone had seen them. Not part of the debate with you Matt.
And nobody has seen Battle this year on video so my point is we have no idea how much muscle and explosion he’s added. No idea if he’s tightened up his handle. We do know he’s grown another inch or 2.
But debating qualities of Top15 recruits is fun nonetheless
The real issue is whether Battle is the type of talent that can help you get to a Final Four, and I think he is. If Langford does not come to Michigan, it will be interesting to see where he lands and whether he’ll find an offense that will suit his skills as well as ours would.
I dunno. Usually I agree with Matt’s “athleticism above all” philosophy but from the footage I’ve seen of Battle, I think he just has a different kind of athleticism – strong, smooth, and controlled moves to the basket rather than the gunpowder and lightning Malik Newman style explosion. And he elevates very nicely.
(On the other hand, in comparing Goodin and Winston, I am definitely biased to Goodin’s explosiveness vs Winston’s polished, but slightly sluggish and heavy-footed play.)
Webb said on WTKA the other day, the only way Langford can get to UM now is if he waits until the late period to sign via attrition (which tons of kids seem to be doing anyway).
Michigan will certainly my keep recruiting him until the end. Would love to get the kid on campus with Battle seeing as though their families are close
Huerter finally did play this morning here in Minneapolis. Had 30 on 8-14 shooting from 3. The City Rocks clinched a spot in the Peach Jam. Don’t know why he would only fly half way across the country to play in one game.
"They figured wrong. During the visit, Battle clicked with U-M players from similar backgrounds and saw an offensive system tailor-made for his skill set. Then there was the pitchman.
“Man, him and Beilein, they were like, arm-in-arm,” Gary Battle said. “It was obvious that Beilein really liked him as a person.”"
Pitchman was the writer's term so I wouldn't read into it.
What do you have to read into it? Beilein sealed the deal, according to Tyus' dad. And he was sold on the system. By Beilein. Beilein shows every recruit how he fits with video examples.
