Hmmm - just watched some more Langford film, maybe I need to retract that statement. He’s very impressive. I think both guys are top 10-15 type players. Langford is stronger and more explosive, Battle a little smoother. Both guys have a solid handle. Both have a nice jumper. I really hope we keep recruiting Langford hard, he would be a great addition, as would Miles Bridges (long shot, most likely).
Battle has better handles, smoother/quicker and a more natural shooter with a quicker release.
Langford is more vertically explosive and powerful. Reminds me of a bigger, stronger more talented Dion Harris.
No doubt both are 10-15 nationally. Langford’s father said Battle to UM helps UM with JL.

Could we have a link to this source or something?
Another interesting question is whether we are better off with Battle then Brown. I think so even though it obviously hurts us this year.
No doubt Brown is great but we needed a dynamic wing more next year with Caris and possibly Irvin leaving. I suppose Brown might have stayed another year and/or we could have brought in a quality 2016 wing either way but I think in terms of roster balance Battle is a better fit

I go back and forth with this…I think Battle is better in terms of on court production over the long haul because I think he’ll be here at least 2 years, whereas Brown is most likely gone after 1 year. But on the other hand, I think Brown gives you more recruiting momentum and ‘swag’ for other recruits…he’s a bigger name that compelled more storylines.
Brown could have instantly made us title contenders. Battle is a GREAT fit for this team, but he’s not a guy that is gonna take us to an elite level single handedly. Not that Brown could do it all by himself, but if you were to throw Battle into the team this year, we’re better no doubt, but I don’t know if we’re automatically a top 10 team like we’d be if Brown were here.
I wanted Brown because he will most likely be an all star in the NBA at some point. I think it helps recruiting when you can point to a superstar alum that is the NBA, and say look what our school can do for you. Other than Jamal Crawford who is a role-player, UM has no big name stars in the NBA.
In terms of the Battle vs. Langford comparison, I’m hearing very positive things about Battle’s defense. Does anyone know if this is true based on film or watching full games?
Bridges still lists UM as among the 5 programs on him the hardest. Pays a compliment to the staff in terms of development, but not really discrete in his perception of our recruiting (at least before Battle came aboard). Moot point, he’s not coming here anyway with Battle in the mix.

Have been doing some research on the whole Battle is a better shooter in relation to Langford…FALSE. I think Battle is a good shooter, but I don’t think he’s great, and not better than Langford. Battle has some mechanical issues in his shot, as he tends to stick his abdomen/torso out while cocking the ball above his head, and also twisting his body to the left upon release…slows down the release but he’s able to get away with it because of the elevation on his shot.
Langford shot 45.3% from distance this year in HS
Also shooting 40% from distance on the AAU circuit

Battle shot 36.6% from distance last year on the AAU circuit.
Battle really struggled last spring, but he was 19 of 42 at Peach Jam and that’s when he added most of the ‘super HM’ offers from Duke, etc. I believe.
Also, as much as I’m a stats guy… It’s very tricky to use them in HS/AAU because there are so many variables.
I do think Battle is a very good shooter though, not saying that Langford isn’t.

As a whole, I don’t see Battle as a ‘shooter’…I think Tyus’ game is much more diversified. I think he’s similar to Langford in that he does a lot of things well, just not quite as good in basically every area in relation to Langford.
Didn’t mean to imply that he was only a shooter, but he can be a very good one. I wrote this in one of the other threads, but I love his ability to slash to the basket and adjust in mid-air to finish. He’s really a pretty complete wing player (you don’t get to be top-15 otherwise) and should be a great fit at the 2.

I’ve watched Tyus in a few full games…notably against Jalen Coleman last year (although they didn’t guard each other). Tyus has a VERY quick first step, I don’t think people realize how athletic Tyus is because most of his highlights depict catch and shoot action. Believe me when I tell you, Tyus is much more than that, he can get to the rack and finish. Doesn’t have enough handle to play PG/Stauskas type handle at this point, but can certainly get to the rack off 2-3 dribbles.
@MattD: No disagreement here. He has sort of an easy athleticism where he can just get by people. Really stood out at Elite camp last year.
Here’s my question, could battle potentially be a better defender at this point?

Hard to say, but I’d tend to go with Langford because of strength/versatility. I think Langford could defend a 4 better than Battle if necessary, because he’s notably stronger than Tyus. Overall, Langford is just a better athlete than Tyus.
Feels like this comparison is Junior version of Langford vs Sophmore version of Tyus Battle. Just because there is no film on Battle this year bc of injury.

Maybe these were already posted, but I haven’t read every thread.
Honestly that clip proves MattD’s point about his handle needing work. He almost loses it a few times.
