IIRC, Darby had some issues with weed in HS.
Darby had issues with food
This I know to be true!
Darby was a good kid. Quick as hell and a brick shit house. I threw a great right cross at him before our game with them. That was an interesting pre game
Back when the Mega Red was one of the best conferences in the state next to the PSL.
I loved watching those Teams play in the 90âs.
Mega Red, PSL, Bishop Borgess (lates 80s/early 90s)âŚand of course Country Day. 90s HS basketball was ridiculously good in Michigan.
Proud to say I played in the mega red
Best talent youâve seen in HS that didnât pan out?
Rob Griffin Belleville. Was a pro if he wanted to be. Unfortunately he was a thief and got the boot from Iowa
Pretty sure we (Milford) played RR in a holiday tournament in Chelsea back in '99 - '00 - although I always got RR and Romulus confused back then. Those guys ran us off the floor in embarrassing fashion. First and only time we had to gameplan for an Alley-Oop within our regular defensive sets. I think that was after the Darby tenure though.
We did get Drew Henson twice a year (in 3 sports)âŚthat was always fun. Hoops was his worst sport, but I bet he would have been an effective mid-major player even still.
Yeah Darby was 99.
Maurice Searight was a phenomenal athleteâhe was recruited to play WR for Miami when they were the dominant program in college football. He was lightning quick and had good size for a pg. Unfortunately, he could never get his head on straight.
For me its Winfred Walton (Pershing) hands down. His raw talent was unreal. Grades were jacked so he couldnât qualify for Syracuse, then he came in to Fresno out of shape and it was pretty much over from there. Definitely think he was NBA material.
What schools are in the Mega Red and the PSL?
Mega Red:
Dearborn
Fordson
Monroe
Southgate Anderson
Taylor Truman
Belleville
Allen Park
PSL - does it truly exist anymore? Notable schools are Detroit Western, Henry Ford, Cass Tech, KingâŚIâm missing a lot but so many of those schools are now defunct
Pershing had some unreal teams in the early to mid-90s. Todd Burgan, Carlos Williams, and Willie Mitchell. Mitchell was the worst of that bunch, but he won Mr Basketball and was the highest-rated recruit.
On a very sad note, I just looked up Carlos Williams and found out he was shot and killed in Detroit in 2002.
IMatt you are off for the mega red in basketball. It was different in every sport.
95-97. In 98 the league shifted and teams like RR and Robichard won their lawsuits to get in
Wayne Memorial
Belleville
Monroe
Romulus
Fordson
Woodhaven
Dearborn
We also played RR AA pioneer Ypsi Garden City(had Brad Boodenburg who played at Oakland)
AhhâŚyou are correct. I provided the football realignment. Thanks for the correction
I had the opportunity to play vs Willie Mitchell in HS and in open gymâŚhe was vastly overrated in HS, and it showed in college.
Willie Mitchell second most overrated Mr. Basketball in the 90s
