What They’re Saying: Preseason publications weigh in on Michigan’s 2020-21 outlook

The only forecast I can stomach at the moment, thank you.

Makes sense given how many close games they won last year. Which is why they finished 30th in KenPom last year.

71.6% chance at an unbeaten record too! This is gonna be a magical year.

Michigan is 11th on Torvik this morning. I definitely think now that KP has come out we will get more #respect since everyone trusts his numbers at least somewhat

11 seems like a good estimate of next years team to me.

We should revisit this debate

In another forum, @Jeffrey_E_Schiller admitted his error on this take.

I don’t think it was a wildly outrageous take. He said it was a top 20-30 team and compared them to 2018 OSU which got 2nd in the B1G that year. I likely had similar thoughts but thought they could get higher than 20 if all goes well

It wasn’t outrageous, but takes that that are why I don’t throw around “ceiling” or “floor” basically ever. There’s a 99% chance I’ll look really dumb in a couple months.

I believe my take was 15-35 range with 25ish being the likely finish. Dickinson’s play on both sides really destroyed that ceiling…

This is probably the most appropriate thread to place this in I think. But this is making the rounds on Twitter, it’s laughable how absolutely terrible some of these takes are even when ignoring the results of the last 1.5 years.

If only he had as much experience as Tom Izzo when he got hired

I don’t live in Michigan so I don’t have to be exposed to the guy, but isn’t he just seeking attention for these takes ala Skip Bayless? Tweeting about it will only give him what he wants

It’s talk radio, so of course that aspect always exists. This dude is a genuine MSU homer/fan though, so it’s still nice to dunk on him while MSU is also struggling.

This was my whole point in the initial argument. Pegging teams preseason is really hard and for a variety of reasons Michigan 2020-21 was extremely hard to peg. Anyways I didn’t come to set off a whole new debate let’s all just agree and be happy that the ceiling for the Juwan era seems to be limitless!

He’s just a guy who’s not super knowledgable about sports and is insanely negative so he basically ends up trashing pretty much every team in the area (less so his alma mater MSU). But he’s the most popular sports radio guy in the Detroit area by far.

Valenti knows going after UM and Lions will get him the most calls and attention. He’s an a$#hat but he understands his market and ratings.

Yet he loves to harp on how Michigan basketball has no following whatsoever… :eyes: :arrow_up_down:

Valenti of course took this way too far and people get lost in his over-the-top negativity and hot takes, but I kind of understand his basic point of if you’re a top 20 program maybe you should expect better than hiring an unproven assistant NBA coach. But Warde Manuel clearly did his homework on Juwan’s coaching and recruiting ability and how it would translate.

There was certainly reason to be cautious or, really, patient. Michigan went from a known, elite quantity in Beilein to a relatively unproven coach with a lot of upside in Howard. But you’re giving Valenti too much credit here. If you intentionally cultivate a brand as hot takey firebrand, but those takes are consistently moronic, eventually your brand just becomes moron, not firebrand. Valenti passed that point when I was in like middle school.
