Vcu

I know Michigan and VCU have to win on Thursday for this to happen, but I’m curious what others think about this matchup. Going into last season’s tourney game I was very confident we would handle their pressure, get lots of easy shots, and win the game. Losing Burke and Hardaway and their poise could be felt more in this game. Can we limit our turnovers? Can we defend and clean up the defensive glass? VCU makes a killing on creating chaos defensively and creating second and third shot opportunities offensively.

I’ve only seen VCU play once this year against Virginia, although it was against the only legit competition they’ve seen all year. This is the one team I wouldn’t worry about with regard to rebouding, Virginia absolutely pounded VCU on the glass during that game from what I can recall. The bigger issue with VCU, as always, is whether our guards can handle the ball pressure. VCU doesn’t strike me as a team that shoots the ball very well either.

Bottom line in my opinion, if possessions are even, we win.

For some reason, I am not worried. Our guys from Walton down to McGary pass and handle the ball well enough to handle their press. Making wide open jumpshots and finishing will be the biggest challenge.

I’m not particularly worried as it stands right now, but I do have one concern. Walton is a good ball-handler, but we have seen him (and Zak) rush transition offense and make sloppy/bad passes that the intended receiver is not prepared for. I foresee that biting us more than once if we play VCU.

Then we put Spike in but I do remember Trey looking less than stellar in the same sense during that game, so it is a lot to ask of a freshmen PG. We’re just so skilled with the ball from 1-5 that it’s hard to imagine them beating us unless we miss wide open jumpshots and finishes at that tempo.
