Sometimes great things happen right in front of us and we don’t see it coming! Reiterating from what I read…"zero McDonald All Americans…6 players in the NBA!
So happy for Michigan basketball and Michigan basketball fans. Get the best talent in the country and let Coach B be Coach B and the reciepe can be multiple final 4s
I’ve been stuck a. Boston Logan airport for the past 8 hrs - can someone please tell me what the hell transpired so quickly!
I spend countless hours on recruiting updates/film evaluation…damn it Tyus, why did you have to do it when I wasn’t internet accessible!
Just embrace it and enjoy Matt D.
Total shocker. Apparently his visit clinched it for him!
Beilein closed like a champ, that’s what transpired!

Kids these days think Beilein is cool.

I think the board was getting close to figuring out where you live to send someone to check on you

I felt the exact same way. Traveling, not much internet. I spent every minute of every day checking basketball news, recruiting, Twitter, etc… And as soon as I can’t do it, something huge happens. It was really annoying.
But hey, I’m not even going to start complaining on this wonderful day that we will prob remember for a long time

If someone from the board could charter a jet on my behalf, that would be really nice! I’ve inquired no less than 10 times concerning the delay…for fog. Are you kidding me? Boston is accustomed to 30 below and 36 inch snow storms and im delayed for fog?
Does anyone think Jabril Peppers and other possible Jersey connections had any influence on the decision?
Obviously Im from Jersey. Coached against him this past HS season. It was I believe his second game back from injury playing for his HS team Gil St. Bernards. First off he is a full 6-6 could possibly be pushing 6-7. First thing I said when he walked into the gym was, “Damn he hit the weight room while he was out of basketball.” NBA body as a junior. He is extremely smooth, glides by people making it look effortless. Good quick release on the jumper, better ball handler than I expected. When we turned up the pressure, Battle was the one to control the ball for his team, valuing the ball and making good decisions. In New Jersey he is on par with Isaiah Briscoe (Kentucky) as far as quality of player. Only one other player I would say in Jersey can touch them and that is freshman Naz Reid who when it is all said and done will be one of the best to come out of the Garden State. Great get for UM, will fill the void left by Levert immediately. Go Blue!!
My brother told me this as a secondary source, so I don’t know the entire truth…but he said that his roommate, who is a waiter at a restaurant in Ann Arbor, waited on coach Beilein, Jeff Meyer, and Tyus early on during the official visit. He didn’t mention anything about it during the meal but Jeff Meyer came back because he left his phone at the table. My brother’s roommate said “Good luck getting Battle” and Jeff supposedly chuckled and said “We’re gonna need it.” Glad to see that something about that visit made it go from “we have little chance” to an all out commit. You have to wonder what the decisive pitch was.

It seems there is something that can be shown on an official visit that will resonate with recruits. As Dylan correctly pointed out, the only other similar recruitment/commitment to Tyus’s is Chatman, and he committed after an official visit (in the fall) and an in-home. There probably is a certain type of recruit that Beilein’s pitch works better for than others, but looks like Tyus is one of those types.

Totally agree, but where I’m puzzled is that Battle didn’t seem to be the guy who would be wooed by a Michigan pitch. I’m saying that just based on his dad’s quotes, and it seemed they were more about exposure and fame, than anything else. Happy to be proven wrong on this one. Honestly I remember reading forum and Twitter posts just a year ago, and no one could have predicted that Thornton could ditch us so roughly while Battle considering us and even more, picking us. It even seemed that Thornton could be the guy that would get Battle to commit here, because there was talk about them wanting to play together.
Very interesting how perceptions cloud our judgement. Basically, We have no idea what they truly think. Just like Brown
From what I’ve read, the Duke side thinks there may have been some writing on the wall with their existing commits/roster and some expectations of who they may get in 2016. It seems that distinctly helped us in this case being able to offer immediate playing time. I frankly don’t care about the how as long as Tyus is happy to be here in the end.
When I spoke to our local HS hoops reporter back in March, who has conversations with the family throughout this process, I was told he was a Duke lean w Michigan as his #2. I didn’t want to get my hopes up and figured he would run to the Blue Devils.
As I posted on another thread, I completely overlooked how his high school recruitment played out. He could’ve gone to any NJ powerhouse such as St Anthony and Bob Hurley or St Patrick who is a national team. Instead, he chose Gil is not the usual NJ “blue blood” program.
So he has never been a “sheep” when choosing a school. Glad he came on his visit here, was given the vision of everything UM has to offer, and decided to become a Wolverine!
But what JerseyJay Hurley SR. says he doesn’t recruit. I always laugh at that when he brings it up.
Pratt he was the first one to do so and he knows it. Had NY kids in Jersey City years ago. Was doing it before Benny and Elizabeth had Luther Wright playing from Jersey City.
Jersey, I read the miracle at St Anthony. I laughed through the whole book that the one kid just showed up. With that said he is an outstanding coach. I use some of his principles after particpating in one of his clinics.
