Both teams had fun and made friends. I think we’re all winners today
He’s a big young man and moves pretty well for his size. He establishes good position. He’s able to wall up. He’s not overly athletic but I think Juwan and company can develop him into a pretty good post defender. He doesn’t jump outta the gym, that’s for sure, and I’m still not sure he can dunk, but I think he’s coachable and I think he can be a good offensive player and an average or better defensive player.
I would not expect him to be a one and done, but probably a two or three year player, three, really, but I know nothing about what it takes to go from college to the pros, which is probably obvious to anyone who has read any of my comments on who should go and who should stay.
It would be great if he could play a year behind Hunter or a really good grad transfer center. Just my opinion. I think he’ll be a good player for us but not an instant star like Hunter.
I like his mobility and ability to defend all the way out to the 3 point line. He will be much better on defense than Hunter.
That steal up top and take for a layup was nice. I’ll forgive him for not dunking as it became a contested shot, but I really wanted to see a dunk!
You guys might be a lot more optimistic than me re: his D. I watched his game vs. Sunrise Christian and was hoping to see that he’d come some way since the summer. Didn’t seem to me like he really felt comfortable playing ball. Was thinking hard about where he was going or what he was trying to do, not playing instinctively.
On the plus side, I’m not sure Hunter looked any worse and I think Hunter was quite good last year when he didn’t have to carry such an offensive load or spend so much time playing in a defense that asked him to get to the level of the screen.
Would guess he’s 6’8’’ without shoes, maybe taller, but expect his standing reach is still >= 9’0’’. Not sure yet how good his lateral movement is, but he can get in a stance and gets up and down the court easily. Not super explosive but if you give him a runway he can be violent at the rim bc he’s so big and long. Think eventually he’s going to show really good feel in the post. Wouldn’t take even odds he’ll ever be a 75+% FT shooter or average 3 pt shooter, though clearly he’s working on that part of his game.
Overall, he’s a flashes guy to me. He shows you a lot of different things he might be but you’re not at all sure what he’ll be able to do consistently on Day 1. I don’t hate the Trevion comp but I would guess that it was already clear what Trevion was going to be by this point in his career. As bad as Trevion can be on D, his feel for the game always popped from what I recall. Would be interesting to compare tape. Feel pretty confident Tarris will make more of his FTs.
And I was trying hard not to be too positive!
I didn’t see the stat sheet for these 3 games, but it seemed like he didn’t play all that many minutes. Was wondering if it was a stamina/conditioning issue or a coaches decision to play the backup more.
I believe his backup is also a top 75 recruit and they split a lot of time
I honestly think they were looking for more atleticism. Tarris was guarding Reneau who is 6’7 or 6’8, more athletic, more “active,” and pretty crafty. The backup was the kid who’s going to Ohio State who is more athletic than Tarris.
Tarris is a load. Has a strong base and moves well in my opinion. He is long. I like his skill level at this point. Stated before see him surpassing Purdues Trevion.
I’m glad you said that and not Tim McCormick! Oh, my
Well I’m no expert. But we need to trust Juwan.
Me, too! Honestly, that’s all we need to do!
Hmm that is a pretty quick stroke…also what the heck is Sidwell doing on TV? Are they legit?
Maybe because they’re friendly…??
For Gregg Glenn
